1. Had a fretless Gherson (is that how it's spelt?) Jazz which was my first ever bass back in 1980. Fancy learning on a fretless?

It was solid but the action was miles high. Not that I knew it was adjustable! Never seen anything written on the brand so would also be interested. Long gone now, of course.

  2. Rhinos Winos & Lunatics - Deke Leonard of Man

Amazon review below (not by me!)

Make no mistake Deke Leonard comes across as a bit of a self important individual who seems to think only his opinion matters to the world, but, a very big but, when you write as well as he does and entertain so thoroughly he is easy to forgive for his flaws. This is memoir as entertainment to rival Spike Milligan. If you don't laugh loudly to the annoyance of all around you at least once a chapter then you have no soul. You don't need to know anything about his career or music to be entertained by this book. Buy it and anything else he produces.

  3. Played a social club in Southampton. Really nice ballroom type venue with stage but only about 30 (enthusiastic) people.

They have booked a tribute act a month, and needed fill-ins between; apparently the tribs get 250 in, but because we're more eclectic we don't fare as well.

Fun, though, despite the 80 mile round trip.

  4. Steve, thanks a lot - I feel slightly less of a Perv now! :)

As for the great Martina, I think of her every time I launch into Take Me To the River - which is about twice a month with my number 2 band...

  5. Some pictures and a price drop to £195 plus delivery

The four controls are pickup balance, treble, bass and master volume. The first three have centre detentes which is useful when you're modifying things on stage.

The full P pickup position makes this indistinguishable from my Precision. The J pickup is more subtle - I usually use the combination and add more treble and bass as the song dictates. The strings go through the body, and the bridge is not only stylish but substantial, so you get the best of both worlds.

The looks I have always thought are similar to a modernised Jazz - an Aerodyne-ish image. The black finish is semi translucent and you can just about see the grain of the wood through it. Headstock is quite understated with the KS logo inlaid in abalone. I like the side-mounted jack position, more convenient than the Fender.

The neck is set, so no plate, and reminds me of my old Guild in that respect. It plays quickly, slightly thinner than a P, and is easy to navigate with fret markers - I find the 12th fret signature a help too. Strings are Elixirs. But the big plus is the weight - it is such a relief to play after my P and you could get through three sets an evening with no pain. The active circuit and natural string-thru sustain mean the relative lightness doesn't affect the sound.

Condition wise it's excellent; metalwork bright and untarnished as can be seen. There's a tiny chip at the top/back of the headstock which is indistinguishable colourwise and too minor to show up on photos. Apart from that, as I got it.
