When I played club cricket I was very unhappy at having to get a new bat, having used the old SS Jumbo I'd inherited off my dad (it still had the Viv Richards endorsement on it!) for about 20 years until it shattered from my nicking an inside edge. So I bought a new SS (the Indian brand not the English one) and all went really well for three games until a quick ball jumped at me and in fending it off the ball hit the handle and snapped it. Fortunately there was a shop near me that did repairs and did it quickly and well, and I was able to hit a quickfire 45 with it next game. Alas it's been gathering dust in my wardrobe for almost five years now but I may get it out again in future if I can be bothered seeking out a new club.

Just had a good laugh at myself and gained some perspective after reading this...

If I was into cricket then I'd probably be sheepishly admitting that I don't even play for a club anymore, whilst staring at a wall full of bats that I keep hoovering up from the for sale section of BatChat.

  2. When I played in a regularly gigging band I had one Jazz bass and an upright.

Now I'm not in a band I've got 6 bass guitars (plus the upright) and I hardly play any of them.

I've definitely been compensating. Like a fool.

  3. Fender if you need that aesthetic for a band - the deluxes are great. Sandbergs are better thought out instruments that are superior in quality, nicer to play and more useful tools for the job. Imho.

Great music can be played on either of course!

This is more why we haven't broken up.

Still going strong since 2007. The right members, the right gigs, the right money and the right attitudes. Very rare.

I think we remain intact because we're not friends. Very little if any communication . We have a husband and wife team that do all the booking and make all of the major band decisions.

You're a lucky man Blue. This scenario would be the only way I could ever be in a band again.

Not needing to socialise with mental creatives or being dragged into their chaotic lives sounds ideal!

Been there, done that, but I'm 51 and a family first guy now.

  5. Close, but the headstock doesn't look quite right without the original's fat walnut stripe. They seem to have gone for the thin skunk stripe of the 4003 for some reason.

(The original headstock was my favourite thing about the 4005).

  6. I'm out.

My oldest bestie came down to stay yesterday for his annual visit. I don't usually drink at all, but to mark the special occasion we went out for a swift Guinness. Several not so swift hours later we concocted a plan to get an online conga/bass thing happening (he has a studio).

Checking my email this morning, Thomann confirms that last night I did indeed buy a Hofner violin bass (SE Ignition) and a set of pyramid flats.

I'm sure it sounded like a great idea at the time, and you know what? It still does! 😂

    Maybe next year...
