Ok, this really is a shot in the dark or like looking for a needle in a haystack but here goes. I am based in the UK and I sold my 1998 3 EQ Teal Green Musicman Stingray to a bassist who either lived or had a friend or family that lived between Kingston Upon Thames and Richmond. More to the point, the place was called Ham and they lived in some flats which I think are somewhere around Northweild Lane, Yeovilton Place, Debden Close which are all off Dukes Avenue. The bass was sold on Ebay in 2001 for around £670.00, came with a Musicman hardcase and I delivered it to this address. I got the impression the person did not live here and I was dropping it with a family member but I could be wrong. Anyway, I would love to get this back if possible as it does have some sentimental value. If anyone knows of any bassists in this area or even better if they are on here, let me know. Very unlikley but hey, its worth a go. I guess, even if you don't want to see it, would be good to know how the bass is doing.

I would say I am not a snob because 95% of basses I see I think are ugly. Either they have a horrible head, a horrible pointy shape, or the necks to long or something else. So most basses i see I don't like. The ones that are on my list of likes are, Musicman Stingray Warwick Streamer Fender Jazz Fender Precision Fender Telecaster Bass Most other basses are ugly to my eyes. However, one thing I really do not like is basses that have lots of knobs or controls. For me it should have volume and tone. nothing else. Also, If you asked me 20 years ago, even 10 years ago if I would own a Squire, I would laugh and say no way. However, now a happy owner of a Squire Vintage Modified Frettless Jazz which I feel is one of the best basses I have ever owned and played. So all in all, my choices are limited due to personle taste. I have about 2, maybe 3 basses I want to own. They are, Musicman Stingray 2 EQ in Cherry Burst. I used to own a Musicman and it was the nicest bass to play and is the best looking bass you can buy so i want another. Squire Vintage Modified Jazz. Beautiful looking bass and hopefully sounds a good as the fretless. So at least i am easy to please :)

Your welcome. Yes, the neck has twisted I think and has also curved. I think the rod can't be adjusted any more to straighten her out. Thats the problem, it can't be adjusted any more so I think it needs expert attention. Its playable still but its not as good as it was. The action used to be amazing but now its a little higher up at the sharp end
Hi Linus - that's also very interesting: good to know that ther's another (more?) out there! .. although disappointing to learn about the neck! Could you add (or send/PM) some photos ? Re. the neck: is it beyond redemption? I guess you've searched for a possible replacement, but that it's tricky with a soewhat (seemingly) rare bass. Would a std. (either original or good copy) fender J neck fit the pocket?
Yes I do look from time to time but the only 400 series necks I have found was one like yours and as you so, they are so rare and such amazing basses. Apart from Ebay, i am not sure where else to look. I am surprised you are selling yours as they are amazing basses. Yes, I will post up some photos for you later tonight. I have only taken the bass to my usual guy who used to set my basses up. He has now kind of stopped working on them and I was wondering if it is worth taking it to somebody more proffesional in setting up guitars and repairs. I would love to get her back to normal as the bass is very special to me. It was a gift from my dad. He was very keen for me to get into music and really supported and encouraged me. He bought it for me new back in 1987 or 1988 which at the time was very expensive. Unfortunately, he passed away 3 months before I signed my record deal and so never got to see me achieve my dream and his dream for me (although I have no doubt he was looking down on me) so I will never ever sell it. My dream is if my son follows in my footsteps and I will pass it on to him on the condition he looks after it and never ever sells it. Its been everywhere with me and has never let me down. The only other option would be a Fender neck but to be honest, I want to keep the original neck as its so thin and not like any other neck I have played. I'll post some pictures tonight.

Hiya cool. Shame you never got to play her at the jam. Don't worry about the address's, I know both venues very well. Might come down someday especially if your using the Stagg.

Interesting read. I have an ESP 400 series Jazz from around 1987 - 1988 and it has a different head stock. It's a bloody amazing bass and I would never sell it. Problem I have is the neck is warped a little on it due to myself not looking after it. Wish I could get it sorted. Good luck with the sale. they are amazing basses.

Replied to you Maxcat. By the way, where is your jam??
-
That is such a copy of the Fender Telecaster bass, I just wonder why anyone would choose one and not an original Fender version.

Glad to see all is sorted for you and very happy you like the colour. Can't say I had your problem but happy your sorted now.
Nice one! Great bassline too, as has been said combines rhythm and melody well. How's the Bass Collection? Peter
Thanks Peter. Bass Collection is going good. Rebecca, loves playing it and is coming along well. She still lacks lots of confidence but it will come in time. Bass wise, the Bass Collection is superb.
Alternating notes like an acoustic guitarist (bass under melody). Reminds me of that bit in All Right Now.
Ah I see. I thought you meant that I was playing with a pick. I do that style a lot. Its atually pretty hard as you think the important part is making sure the melody comes through but its more important that the bass bit is prominent enough to supoort the melody. Otherwise it all sounds a bit empty and less melodic.

Cool. Thanks for the replies. I think the last time I played it was about 8 years ago so it was fun trying to learn it again

After seeing all the videos of people playing along to other peoples songs on YouTube, I thought I would have a go also for a laugh. I was going to do a U2 song as I know them like the back of my hand. However, after seeing a YouTube video of somebody playing one of my old bands songs, simply by having a camcorder pointing at the 7" single playing on a record player (why??), I thought why not record the bass line to that :) So, here it is. The song is called Radio Finland and is by my old band Inter. Your notice a few bum notes and all my bad habits, including my very naughty thumb which keeps over hanging the neck. Anyway, I found it quite fun to do and may do some other stuff later. Enjoy, if thats possible :) CLICKY HERE

Part of a Scottish tour we played Dundee shopping centre once. That was fun if not a little weird. We then went on to play a gig for homeless children. However, we had just released a single and so, to make it easy, we mimed the music and did live vocals. We only played 3 songs but again, interesting. We also played at Dagenham bowling alley a few times. I'm sure I have more odd places I have played at.

You may not actually use your amp at all. You may go direct into the desk depending on the sound they want for the bass. When we recorded our album, on one track we used my old Fender Telecaster bass with the amp setup in an out building in a tiny room mic'd up to get a fat, boxy dirty sound. However, when I used the Musicman, I went direct into the desk as it gave a really clean punchy sound. The Precision was a mix of both. We also recorded bass, 1 guitar track and vocals over a drum machine which acted as a guide track which the drummer then played over for his guide. Once the drummer had his part down, we then layered our parts down, starting with bass. You might not get that luxery as we were in the studio for 3 months. Not sure if you will get the chance to but if you can, set up and run through the songs as a band to just loosen up and get warmed up. have fun with this and just relax and enjoy it. Its a great way to de-stress before actually recording for real. Make sure you were confortable, loose clothes. It gets hot in a studio, especially when you get to play your part. Your hands will get sweaty, especially if you are nervous. Make sure you are comfortable and stay confortable. There will be lots of sitting or standing about and you don't want to get a stiff neck or shoulder whilst you are playing or about to play. If you struggling playing a run or a link, forget about it and move on and either leave it out, simplify it or ask to come back to it if you can. No point getting stressed out as your never get it right.
Ahhhhh maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnn there's nothing worse than hearing someone playing the 'tuning song' halfway through a set, when their ears have already been assaulted by an hour of the drummer's cymbal slices. Even worse when they attempt to do it at full volume! Grrrr... so unprofessional! Silent tuning all the way!
Our guitarist used to do this. Winds the hell up out of me. I agree, so unprofessional.

When I was in a band that was signed, we would make an effort ourselves to save money as we knew at the end of the day, it would bite us in the arse and cost us money. We had the chance to fly to Seatle and record our first album with the guy who produced Pearl Jam's first album. For a newly signed band, this was a very tempting and exciting prospect but in the end we said, its not needed, it would cost way to much and we ended up going to a studio in Wales where the Stereophonics record. No doubt saving us a ton of money. Just the thought of shipping us and our equipment over to the States for a few months was very scary. So, its easy for bands to take the piss but the record companies can and are just as bad but I guess you get it in all manner of industries.
Garry Gary Beers - which album/songs?
I was wondering this. I am a big Garry bary Beers fan and not aware of what tracks he played fretless bass on.
With the demise of some great venues (th tumbledown, and the astoria) will there be anywhere left to play in the future?.. So many venues are being closed down and turned into restaurants, or being knocked down for the new high speed rail link..
Also the West End Centre is still on shakey ground. I think the Star in Guildford is still going strong for now.
