1.
It's become a PMT store and it's much better. Better stock all round. They had some Music Man basses, basses from all the Fender ranges and I was surprised to see Clover basses there too. Checked out a Squier Classic Vibe P, an American Deluxe P with a subtley flamed maple fretboard and a Stingray through a tiny but pretty decent Line 6 amp. If you're in the area check it out
im off to leeds on saturday so hopefully the wife will let me off on my own to go bass spotting. its not in the centre is it?

  2. good - i'm a tryer!, i dont over complicate things, creative with my limits, after 15 years i have found a sound that i like!

bad....theory etc is alien to me, tone deaf, it took me 15 years to find the sound (who would've thought - mid scoop?!?!?)

  3. I have been a member of this board fo ra short time now and after reading various posts, i have seen and read about many an amazing contraption with regards to the world of the bottom end and the prices that are attached to them. basses with LED lights poly-urine carbon neck, flux capcitors and a little tray off water on the back to cool your nuts down, a world of add ons to be had. It all racks up on top of , what is at the end of the day, a very basic instrument.
but as i spew out this rubbish i was wondering what peoples cash limitis are when purchasing a bass?

Me for example, i am a fan of 4 string passive basses (like jeff berlin but with out the tash and hopefully not as much of a tool) i like things plain and simple. the most i've ever spent on a bass (acttive) was £850 on a second hand but gigged Stingray (sold on for the same prce in december! i do not joke) i would have to say that £1000 would be my very very top marker when it comes to buying a bass. anymore i'd have to slap myself and remeber it's gonna be slung in the back of a fan und well used in a sweaty club somewhere.

so come on everybody whats your limit?

p.s. sorry if this has been done many times before.

p.p.s thinking about it i wouldnt pay 1000 clams. i wlways look at the 550-850 ballpark.

  4.
I'm sure I have a Motown tab book kicking around somewhere.

I'll be back home on Sunday and can see if I can find it then.

If no-one beats me to it then zap me a message on Sunday to remind me :)
5.
I do often wonder if anyone who actually plays bass well writes any of the tabs I find on the net. A lot of them I have found are written by folk with egg and cress salad in their ears
i ilke egg salad, pre ear.

  6.
He means read the dots, young man. The Book isn't tab, it's proper notation.

Can anyone tell me if the Gladys Knight version of 'Grapevine' is in this book?
ah some crafty muso cat talk. :) i don't do proper notation.

  9.
I've posted in this section as I'm geuninely interested to know how wearing your wedding ring affects you playing bass (or guitar if you do). I'm getting married next year and I wouldn't like her indoors to think that I take my wedding ring off to play and wouldn't fancy losing it either.

Anyway, I'm guessing the big chunky ones are out - do you have a particular style of ring and did you choose it because it was more comfortable for playing the bass?!!
Good on yer john. I got married last month. My ring isnt chunky its a bit flatter then the norm. i have however noticed the difference when playin. you see i have short fat fingers (like dusty hill) and a very lazy left hand when it come to playing, i have therefore noticed it keep ssnagging on the G. After my last practice (3rd since i got back form honeymoon) i have noticed my left position is getting better and a little more 'normal' (thumb in the middle of the neck almost and not hanging over the top!) for this i thank my wife. getting married improved my playing! Thank Feck i dint get i ring tattooed instead!

Hurrah for mweddings. Boo for nazis!

  10.
I fancied a bit of Seller Baiting to cheer me up:

    "Hi!

I think you may be slightly mistaken as to the heritage of this bass. It's bodyshape is styled on a Musicman Stingray, which will definately not have come from Fender, and the headstock logo says it's a Precision bass, not a Jazz as per your description.

Does it have any serial numbers, or any other identification to give potential buyers a better clue as to where this bass was actually made?

    Thanks
    Phil"

    His Reply:

"Hi,i did originaly list the item as looking like a stingray but ebay removed the listing.i bought the bass off ebay around 2 years ago. There are no numbers etc on the bass if there were i would have photo'd them. The finish is very good and it sounds sweet,if it were a musicman i would not have started it at 99 with no reserve,i put jazz on the listing so more people would see it,if i put 'bass guitar' it would get limited viewings, cheers pete. "

Soo, do I now question his reasoning for putting Fender as the manufacturer, or just get ebay on his arse for all the other infringements he's got? Admitting that he's listed it as a Jazz to get more hits should mean he'll get asked to take it down, for starters, right?

Whatcha recon, anyone else wanna have a poke at him?
Best just leave him. Might not be all ther eup top!

The hard case has GOT to be worth £50! classic.

  11. OK story is this. About 1998 i purchased a pre owned Fender Precision for a bargin price from my local guitar shop. On the headstock it said USA Custom Shop.
A couple of years later i stumbled upon a web site that had all fender serial numbers on, typed mine in and it came up with pleasing news it was a 1986 (maybe 84, 85) custom shop P bass. "OK very nice" i thought.

the years dragged on and it got gigged. Then one rather nasty night i lost my head and so did she (the bass) headstock and first 1/4 of the neck where seperated from the rest of it!!!!

My then lovely guitarist picked up the head stock, looked at me and muttered the following words: "i'm gonna keep this, you never know one day you may be famous". I laughed, he laughed, i sobbed, he scored.

Then i replaced the neck with some cheap chunky piece of trash and let it gather dust in the corner whilst i went on my musical 'wilderness' period.

Now i have lost contact with the guitarit and want to look into doing this bass up for a bit of a project. I was hoping to get the serial number off him (it was on the head stock IIRC) but that seem to be a hopeless quest.

I'm thinking that this wasnt a kosher bass as i thought due to the £285 price tag, and now what to source info on it to guide me in what to do next eith it.

so to sum up - Mid 80's p bass, apparently USA custom shop, J pick up at the back, Brass (maybe) scratch plate with a sand/cream paint job.

pics are somewhere let me look....
