Will there still be a Thunderfunk 800 Robbie? I'd read something on Talkbass about an 800watt 2ohm capable Thunderfunk on the way.
-
Any idea how much more than the 550 it'll be Robbie?
-
The DB750 is reputed to be quite Thunderfunk-ish, but a bit fatter (both sound-wise and physically!) so that'll maybe give you an idea of what to expect (I know you owned the Thunderfunk that Bassjamm's selling at the mo' - an it sounds GOOD!)
-
Too cheap at £350. I have one that sounds identical to this (EMG pickups and all) - I sold my Wal because it wasn't getting used. That's how good mine is...
-
I have the single channel version of the Aguilar AG500 amp. Great amp. Loud enough for anybody and sounds great, but It's quite clean (as with a lot of solid state amps). I'd like to add distortion of some description, but I'm not much of a pedal fan any more.
Would someone have a dual channel AG500 they'd be interested in exchanging (with cash your way of course!). Would have to be in AS NEW condition with rack ears, same as mine.
I could add an AGRO preamp I suppose, but it's another rack space and quite pricey in the UK!
May consider trades for a Thunderfunk also (but nowt else I'm afraid)
Cheers

Solid state basically means everything that isn't valves!
Having heard my Ashdown alongside an SVT3 I would say you can't really go wrong with either for what you're looking for. -
The SVT3 is the SVT-PRO with a solid state power amp added Jamie. Might be a good option. Try an Ashdown though, it might be all you need.
-
SWR use the same principle in their interstellar overdrive preamp I believe. Always thought it was a great idea!
-
Oh... sorely tempted! If I hadn't just put the deposit down on a Shuker I'd have your arm off. I've got this one's fretted twin already... A great deal here lads. You'll not get a better bass under 2 grand. Mine forced me to sell my Wal through underuse!
-
Totally - love a bit of Wal porn!
-
So you were able to wait a year for a sei but you can't wait an extra week for your Shuker? Only joking of course! That would get my goat too. The bass looks like it'll be worth the extra wait though.
I plan to ferry it from Belfast to collect my Shuker when it's ready so count yourself lucky that it's only 4.5 hours each way! -
Well I've gone and done it. I've just put down a deposit with Jon for a 6 string bolt-on custom.
Here's the spec we've agreed:-
35" scale
24 fret
2-way truss rod
Carbon fibre reinforcement
All wenge laminated neck
Birdseye fingerboard
Abalone dot inlays
Quilted maple head veneer (matching body finish)
Jumbo frets
Bone and brass laminated nut
Satin finish on neck (pores filled)
Red side LEDs (jaguar style rear control plate switch)
Wenge body (thinned down to save weight)
Quilted maple top (drop top, polyester basecoat, gloss tiger eye finish)
Matching ramp (matching quilt and finish)
EMG DC soapbars
John east / ac preamp (questionmark over this though)
black hardwear
solid ABM bridge with adjustable spacing (standard 19mm spacing)
Gotoh GB707 tuners
It's a big step for me, in more ways than one: my first custom and my first 6 string. I've been thinking about it for a while (and tried every couple of years for the last 10 to get Jon to build me something, but 2 redundancies and an engagement ring purchase have got in the way!).
Still a few things to iron out, mostly the preamp - I'd love to put an AC Wal-style preamp in this, but Alan (AC Guitars) isn't selling the preamp to the public. I'm giving this a bit more thought, and since it's about the last thing Jon needs a decision on I should have a while to ponder! Jon has quoted 12 - 20 weeks build time, but I'm taking 20 as minimum!
Hoping for a finish similar to this sadowsky: -
What cab are you looking for?

SCHWEET!!!
X times 1.5 I suspect
Jon says more than 12, less than 20. I'm taking the minimum to be 20 though. That way I'll hopefully be surprised rather than disappointed! -
That's GORGEOUS! I'm going to get my deposit to Jon this week so hopefully in x number of weeks I'll have something approaching that to show!
Health to enjoy -
If you're willing to ship internationally you'll get more than £1500 for it. Some ejit from the other side of the pond who's never layed his hands on one before'll give you about £2200 maybe, even in its current condition. I speak from experience...
It's a mighty nice bass, btw! -
Egypt is mighty! We were there a few years back. Alexandria, Siwa, Luxor, Cairo, Nile cruise topped off by a stay at the Old Chataract hotel on the Nile. Fantastic time. A bit hot for me in the valley of the kings though (@44 degrees!).
-
Probably would - I've had a few inquiries in the past when I thought about selling it, but I'm nervous about posting it (I'm in Northern Ireland). I'm about to slap some money down with Jon Shuker for a 6 string and I'll want to pick it up in person, so there's a road-trip to be planned in the near future. I may swing by the bass merchant too and pick up a few db112s and head case for my ag500 (tweed all the way for me!)...
-
Looks great!
Definately fancy a couple of those db cabs. Maybe Bass Merchant would take my Tech 4x12 back as a trade-in... -
You'll be putting 750 watts into 2 x 12. I'm sure it'll be loud enough.
MY DB750 absolutely slays connected to my UL310.
3 12s... not the norm but when the amp can run down to 2 ohms why not!
It'll be the dog's dangly bits I'm sure and plenty loud enough! Let us know what the db112s sound like. Would love 2 to go with my AG500. I'd have to get a head case too. All in tweed of course! -
SCHAAA..WING!
Very nice! -
Hey you guys aren't sales reps for Shuker?
Ding!
No but there seems to be a few for Modulus around here -
I agree, at the end of the day the instrument has to feel good to us personally and we have different sized fingers, hands, arms and...well, this all has a bearing on what we prefer and feel comfortable and then there's all those different kinds of music!!
There is no perfect single the best of the best because of the subjective nature of music and making it but there is a standard of quality and finish and innovation that speaks for itself.
Just some more thoughts as to a balanced and informed approach to opinions...

Here, here. Well said. Exactly right. IMHO. YMMV. Etc. Etc.
Having said all that i've played 2 supposedly exact same basses on the same day in different locations and had the opposite opinion of each. Who's to say why, but it's the reason I wouldn't buy a bass from this particular manufacturer without playing it first. Starts with an F...

From the talk an Talkbass there's an 800watt version in the works which'll be 600watts at 4 ohms (close to current t'funk specs), 700watts at 2.67 ohms and 800watts at 2 ohms.
A downside for some guys on talkbass seems to be that the 550 can't handle a 2 ohm load - the 800 is supposed to be a response to that.
My question would have to be: has the 800 developed into the 750 and is 2 ohm capable, or will there be 2 separate amps?
Dood there's been more talk about a preamp and it looks like it might be happening. Dave's also talking about a 1600 watt into 4 ohm bridgeable, 3 unit head! NICE!
