1. Simply put a laminated neck increases in strength for every ply added. It's not imagined. You can do a slab sawn neck, they work fine with the right piece, and a good fb. i can supply the US Forrestry service study on wood lamination if you desire, but here is a more simple study which is easy to read. http://www.usc.edu/CSSF/History/2010/Projects/J0207.pdf The grain advice given is good, the better your grain is aligned, and the more closely it resembles quartersawn, the better it can be. Things to remember. gluing surfaces must be flat and square for good lamination, woods must be properly dried, too much clamp pressure can squeeze out most of the glue resulting in dry joins thus rendering the laminate weak. grain alignment is mandatory for predictable results. Good Luck with your project, and have fun with it.
2. That looks great, love those covers, really ties the whole top together.
3. Thank you Paul, I am finding this community very cool, which is tough for an old guy like me...LOL
4. While my tastes have changed greatly as I got older (my avatar and my facebook page are qualifiers) when the Mouradian first came out, and I saw Chris Squire playing one, I thought it was the coolest thing I had ever seen, and ended up with one for a short period of time.
5. Hey Alan, Thanks, I had to check out what you guys were talking about. very cool Thanks Alanbass1 Thanks Ian, good to see you keeping the GA alive...LOL
6. I'll try to avoid that Pete, but as with other sites, I try to be a participant, and not one of these guys who come on and start right off using the site as advertisement...LOL I see it on many sites, and I don't want to be one of those types. The next full build thread I do, I will be sure to include pics here also. Ian(scojack) Alan (ACG) and Simo(Simnette) pointed this site out to me, so I wanted to just try to be respectful of the many great guys doing very cool work on this site, and not be a build bomber...LOL besides, I don't build too often, so it won't be too prevolent...LOL and thanks for the greet.
7. yes gareth, that is one of my signature 2 models, a 5er fretless just being completed this week. I like to change my Avatar pic to represent what I am working on at the time(usually builds only) not repairs and mods, those are relatively less photogenic...LOL And thank you Gareth and Mark
8. There are a few different p bass necks. the early 50's necks were 1.75" (45mm) and very thick, very log like, then in the 60's they stayed with the width, but thinned the necks to make them more comfortable. In the 1980's the modern P-bass neck came to be with the 1 5/8"(41mm) nut width, and an even slimmer thickness, which has stayed similar since, so you may want a modern P neck to accomodate your hands, or as stated by many here, switch to a Jazz neck if you like the narrow slim feel.
9. Just wanted to say hello to the participants here, I am from Portage, Michigan in the USA, I own a small repair/restoration/custom shop, working on instruments of all varieties for a living. I am a former bass player(I only play at home with recordings anymore, no time for bands). I began playing Violin and Viola as a child, progressed to Cello where I became an accomplished player in both school, and symphonic settings, and was bitten by the Rock/hard rock bug when I first heard Rush in 1974, I finally, in 1977, hijacked my brothers 69 Fender Jazz and was hooked. I am well educated former electrical/design engineer for a major MPU developer, left after 5 years to persue my dream of building instruments, thus building a repair/mod/restoration clientele and have been at it since. thanks for having me. best always, JC
10. Ian, I love how you keep incorporating the GA into your builds, very cool.
11. One of the gods! Stanley Clarke http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHjysxr4HCQ...feature=related
