Is this still around? Would you consider splitting it?
-
Will bought my Labella short scale strings, flawless transaction as ever, thanks dude
-
Is the bag with it too please?
-
Paid £45.40 from bass direct this week, laid the E string against my Hofner short scale bass and it's not long enough as the silk got as far as half way across the first fret.
"Short Scale Set: Distance from Ball-End to Silk is 32 1/4″; only the silk portion of the string should wrap around the tuning post"
E string has a kink in the silked section from my 'trying it for size', other strings not even uncoiled from the packaging.
price includes uk postage.

I don’t know the answer to your question; but let me know what your thoughts are on it when you get it and use it.
Will you be using it for regular gigging? On 24/01/2024 at 10:56, andydye said:I certainly will yes and yes it will be my 'every show' means of carting basses around, replacing my SKB i-series in that regard but with the upgrade of being able to take 2 basses to the show rather than just one
Done a couple of gigs with it so far and I'm loving it
yes, it's a bit tricky for swapping basses on the fly, and...
no a bass won't sit in the case if it has the strap attached, but...
both basses are lovingly and firmly held by the foam inserts
it is super easy to wheel around, watch it on tight corners if you're going quickly though as it may topple over
it feels super lightweight compared to my skb i-series single bass case which is amazing
I still have to drop a seat in my car to get it in
the accessory pouch thingy is big enough for my strap, cable, battery pack, earplugs and a 'tile' tracker thingy

Ah, but will you go headless?
What other specs you looking at? I assume you'll be speaking to Mr Shuker about this bass, so which of his designs have caught your eye?
Headless? ha, no I don't think so, it was a little strange...

update...
having tried my good friend Chris' Warwick thumb 6 and WoodnTronics headless 6, I have a finer handle on what does and doesn't work
the Warwick measured as
9mm string to string at the nut, and
17.5mm spacing at the bridge
WoodnTronics
10mm string to string at the nut
16mm at the bridge
The 10mm at the nut felt good, but the 17.5mm at the bridge worked better so I think I'm content with that combo ...for now

It's about 10-15 mins away. You're welcome to come by before hand should you so wish!
oo! I'll find out how tight our timings are for arrival and soundcheck etc and see if I can nip out between our soundcheck and doors while the supports are setting up

I'm definitely no where near you, but if you find yourself in Essex at any point, you're welcome to come have a noodle on the various 6+ string basses in my garden studio.
ahh thanks matey, much appreciated
I'll be playing the hot box in chelmsford on Thu 25th April with my band The Fargo Railroad Co if that's anywhere near you and you fancy an evening of americana / country rock?

String spacing, which indirectly relates to neck width, is an aspect to consider as well.
It usually go from regular 4 string standard 19mm, in some rare cases even 20mm, spacing and all the way down to 16.5mm, in some rare cases even tighter string spacing.
19, 18, 17 and 16.5 mm string spacing are all fairly commonly used for 6 string bases.
thanks dude, I'm either going for 17 or 17.5mm I think, it's the nut width I need to make sure I'm comfortable with now

Brethren, I'm hankering for a Shuker 6 string (34" scale B-C), in itself a fine thing, but, questions of nut width, and string spacing have come up and I want to get this right so...
Are there any 6 string lovers within an hour's drive of me who would allow me to come hang out for half an hour or so and try your 6 string basses so I can get a feel for whether any particular necks feel more 'me' than others?

Bit of a tale to tell with this one, I bought it as a nostalgia trip as it's identical to the bass I had when I first met my now wife, annoyingly it needed a bunch of work when it arrived (from ebay) despite the listing saying it was perfect, playable, yadda yadda yadda, here's my list of the issues it HAD...
- unplayable action
- insane banana neck
- siezed intonation screws on the saddles
- siezed truss-rod
- no battery cover (I made one from a scrap of scratchplate my mate had)
- most of the screws were rounded off and knackered (replaced with new where necessary)
- generally very dirty
- electrics didn't really work and the pots were noisy (new battery and a bunch of cleaner sorted that)
- the fretwork is 'somewhat' uneven, up the dusty end especially
I...
- sorted the neck curvature,
- freed up the intonation screws,
- freed up the truss-rod,
- made a battery cover (see pics - it isn't awful and does do the job nicely),
- took the neck off, cleaned the pocket and re-did the shim to improve the neck angle, could maybe be better done but it's loads better than it was
- cleaned everything as it had a layer of scuzz all over it,
- oiled the fingerboard,
- restrung it (tuned E-C) with GHS bass boomers High C - 030/100 chrome rounds
It now plays, cleanly, from open string to fret 14 or so, above which the frets are so uneven some of the notes don't even sound whereas others do, this is why I'm saying it needs fret work, at the same time as fret work the nut will need tweaking too as the string height at the nut is high. It may be that a fret dress at the dusty end and a nut tweak might fettle it.
The action is currently pretty low now, you can get the 'snap' if you dig in and you could gig it as is, my OCD won't let me as it isn't 'perfect' but it is almost certainly good enough. I tried to measue string height at 12th fret but my tape measure wasn't helpful, it is about 2/3 of a usb stick?
There are a few minor blems on the body, it has been used and it's at least 23yr old! The photos show the condition pretty well, it feels nice and clean but does look VERY dusty in the pics...oops
The sound is a very 'emg-ish' sound with the active pre engaged, it has volume, bass, treble which has active/passive push-pull and a 3 way pickup selector for the Samick branded PJ set
the string spacing is fairly tight at the bridge, looks like 15mm string centre to centre (see pic)
nut width is similarly cosy at 41mm (see pic)
neck profile is quite shallow and there is a radius on the fingerboard but it's flatter than a Fender for sure.
weight isn't at all bad at 3.7kg / 8.2lb
Some blurb I found...
"Produced from 1993-2001, the YB5-639 packs a lot of punch and playability for a great value. Unfortunately, the serial number sticker was missing from this bass when it was traded in to us, so we have no sure way of knowing its production year. A great choice for the intermediate player or for the beginner wanting to get rumbling in style.
Features include:
a sleek contoured offset scooped double-cutaway solid alder body,
bolt-on maple neck,
34" scale,
24-fret rosewood fingerboard with pearl Saturn fret marker inlays,
4-1 die-cast tuners,
gold hardware,
P/J style pickups,
volume/tone controls with a push/pull, 3-way selector switch, active/passive circuitry and a sweet "Granite Gold" finish."
It's a cool bass that someone with either the skill, or the time to learn the skill with frets could make into a genuinely pleasing bass to play, it looks great, sounds cool, the neck feels good, it needs a more comprehensive setup than I'm equipped for and it isn't worth enough to warrant taking to a luthier (I don't think) but would be an excellent project for someone.
Ebay have finally refunded me so I've dropped the price accordingly.
Bass is in Hope Valley (S33 6SB), you are most welcome to collect it in person and see what you think, I do still have the box in which it arrived so could ship it within the UK, it would be well packed, no case or bag with it I'm afraid.
I think I've covered everything, pretty sure I've covered all the gremlins I've uncovered so no nasty susprises for anyone else.
Price is what it currently owes me, happy to talk offers by pm?

I love my Shukers

I'm thinking 17mm, it's not going to be a slapper, fingers only, if I want to slap I've a 5 string that's bob on

I always choose Hipshot type A bridges, I love the quick string change, saved my bacon at a show in Germany, twanged a string in the intro and was back from the dressing room with a new string on before the first chorus

sweeeet
aye, I'm torn between 17 and 17.5mm
-
thanks for checking that ma dude, I'm talking to Mr Shuker about adding a 6 aye, don't want as wide spacing as my old ACG but wider than my old Thumb 5, I've got between 16.5mm (Thumb 5) and 18mm (ACG) now as my spacing window
-
I briefly owned this beautiful bass by Alan a good few years back
https://acguitars.co.uk/project/0100recurvestype6-2-2-2-2-2/
...and I wondered if anyone on here had it?
I mostly want to know it has a good home but would also like to double check the string spacing at the bridge...the ACG website suggests 19mm but that sounds nuts to me

Thanks for the reply.
Was mainly interested, in how well the interior foam holds out, with the regular removing of the basses- as a normal case/bag would be used.@knicknack has been using his for a good few years now so he'd be an ideal person to ask about the longevity of the insides

finally ordered myself an enki this morning (from Thomann), can I ask though...
how big is the accessory case that you get with it please?
what do you use yours for?

Jon's work is so so good, I would love to have this one to add to my stable but I have a hankering for more strings than that
