  1. I had blue and red stain left, I hand blended so if honest purple was a guess, ie I knew it would be some sort of purple, but had no clue exactly what. The burgundy I ended up with I will gladly take.
  2. A few things worth noting: this entire bass was almost entirely built from stuff laying around, just the nut, trussrod and frets were bought when putting oil on fretboard two darker lines developed between the 4th and 5th. fret. Almost like they are imperfections in the wood, they didn’t show when sanding. I played around with sanding them out, but that would cause me to sand the entire fretboard again. Since this one is just a fun bass for me I am not bothering. Character and all. i almost never grain fill, as I like the look of just the wood. There are some lovely surface fissures that should look pretty cool once oiled. had some minor tear out when I drilled 4 holes in my pickup/ramp. Needs a little touch up. My pillar drill is a heap of poo. I hand drilled the others, no issues. Should be fine, but just annoying when tools are not doing as they are told.
  3. I will snap some more pics when there are a few coats of oil on. Will show the final picture. It will get a touch darker.
  4. Purple Burgundy on Mahogany.... there, fixed.
  5. So, I am at finishing stage finally. A 1st coat of oil on the neck and the body will get the first tomorrow. Getting to where I need to be 😀
  6. Purple on mahogany, great look (in my opinion)
  7. Have settled on the 9th fret as the parallel one. Makes chords a little easier and since the fan is not huge it also still works on the nut end.
  8. Been doing some sketches on the desired body shape. Quite liking this.
  9. Frets polished! Tomorrow I am going to sand everything to 600 grit, colour the body (purple), finish the pickup (screws), sort out all hardware and do all other bits required. Then start building coats of oil from Sunday onwards hopefully.
  10. I imagine they are super glued in. Applying heat will loosen, but will also loosen your fretboard potentially. Personally I would use a fret saw to saw the slots and sort the removal issue out that way. The plastic (polystyrene most likely) should be softer than the wood, so low risk of damaging anything.
  11. I do full builds, mods, tweaks and what have you. Personally I really don’t care if it is assembled or made from scratch, as long as I enjoy doing it. Whilst I am relatively capable, my full builds are not Ken Smiths or Wals, nor would I expect them to be and in turn I would not judge anyone for using parts instead of building things themselves. It is so dependent on time, money, equipment, talent and skill. Not all bass players are equal, but they are all bass players. Same with bass builders. So as long as people are transparent about what they have done I have zero issues at all. And mind you, many custom basses are made by CNC ... so you should not even attempt to draw a line.
  12. Fantastic! This will be stunning. Noll/Delano combo also is a great combo, I have the TCM3P in several basses.
  13. Yes, exactly the same as the one in the Schecter and Spector Dimensions.
  14. Just some polishing to do and we have a nicely fretted neck. Quite content this time around, frets went in without issue and I only needed minimal leveling/crowning. Fret ends were filled with super glue and wenge dust.
  15. My goal is to stay under 4 kg/9lbs, with Ash you can never really know what you are getting (although I asked for light ash...). I will most definitely chamber if I need to, but the body will also be relatively compact so between the chambering and compact size we should be good. I am going an Youtube with the pups, but everyone seems really positive about them and they seem to tick every box for me.
  16. As I have just ordered a bunch of stuff for my next build, just thought I would wet your appetite a little. This one will likely take me 4-5 months to complete, so bear with me. Modern design, 5 string multi-scale 35-33” Ash body Black Walnut top Maple/Wenge neck Ovangkol fretboard Black hardware Schaller Tuners 3+2 Hipshot Triple Lock single saddle bridge Fishman Fluence pickups and preamp 18mm string spacing Nut width 45mm 5 bolt bolt-on neck Not yet sure if I am going for an angled or scooped headstock
  17. Wow, am even on page 2.... I have clearly not been on for a while and more interestingly there are few build threads up! Yeah for us builders. I finally will have some time again to progress this short scale build tonight and this weekend. Hope to be approaching “finish prep” by then. In the meantime I have been working on (and ordering wood and parts) on the next build. 5 string, multiscale (35-33 or 32”), modern design with the Fishman Fluence pickups in. Goal is that this bass will become my main 5-er. More details to follow on that in a few weeks (some parts have long lead times).
  18. Thanks, unfortunately I will not have any time for a few weeks so completion is a little while off. But such is.
  19. Frets are in, still need dressing and leveling etc, but so far I am pretty happy. Starting to look like a mini bass
  20. I’d like to buy it, but I am saving up for this
  21. On a 35DC the magnets are 2.9” long, or 73.6mm. To give enough room for the string to vibrate left to right, you are looking at a total string width of 64mm, or 14/15mm spacing on a 5. Unless you are not intending to do any slapping, that is a bit tight.
