He has no finesse, a completely naive musical approach, uses a bass in a way it was never intended .. but you know what, he's a bit of a genius in his own f***ed up way. We should greatly respect Hooky as someone who did it in the only way he knew how to, and for truly expressing himself and not trying to be someone he isn't. 99% of us are just being someone else with a titchy little gloss of our own personalities as the cream on the huge bass trifle.
agreed.
 2.
Miles Davis regularly turned his back to the audience when he performed. Did not seem to bother anyone, as they were there to listen as much as see.
I went to see Santana 20 odd years back and he did exactly this. P*ssed me off no end, I didn't pay to see him treat it as a rehearsal.

 4.
Yeh i stopped going when the police swooped on it & made it a paranoid, police state. thats the last year i went, shame as it was a fantastic festival. which band were you in ?
I was DJing at the time under the monikers of Paul Torch and Torchcore. In fact, it was the Wickerman that got me interested in bands again. I think they were a victim of their own success. There is a small break-away festival up in that neck of the woods run by the original guys that that got me involved, Eden Festival. Looks lo-key and grass roots so may give that one a go, it's a bit of a trek from london though.
 5. I'd have to say Hooky was an influence me. as was anyone who took the bass and pushed it up-front - The Ox, JJ.
 6. Type O Negative did and awesome doom-metal cover of Magical Mystery Tour live but I can't seem to find a decent recording of it.
 7.
Yes I was bouncing round like a mental imp that weekend shame the police ruined that festival
I was playing in the Bhuta tent. Can't remember when (you know how it is ). I started going to/playing there at the second one and went to about 8 or so. It was awesome in the early days but I think it's lost a little of it's vibe along the way. Still got loads of mates from up that way so may venture there again next year.
 8.
I was there at the Wickerman......right at the front all the way through .
Ha! Nice one! Did you make your way to the Bhuta tent?

Both were great but Dub Side is my favourite.

 20.
Doesn't make it right, and if after your free work you were expected to carry on for free you'd soon realise that it wasn't the best way for you to be working.
That wasn't the way it worked for me. If I'd continued to not be paid then I would have realised that it wasn't the career for me and found some other way to make a living. Sometimes you have to speculate to accumulate. I do know some companies that string this type of thing out as long as possible. That is not right and if I found myself in that position I would say it's time I was paid or move on.
 21. surely "professional" musicians have to start somewhere? I know that at the start of my design career I regularly did "gigs" for free to get the experience and show my talents off. In fact I still do the occasional free job depending on the circumstances. It's an accepted thing.
 22.
I take offence at the notion that as soon as you earn money from an artistic pursuit, the artistry or the integrity of the artist has in some way been compromised. At any given time what you do creatively will either correspond with what other people want or it won't. The trick is to make the most of your creativity when it becomes financially viable.
no offence meant. I wasn't stating that as soon as money enters into the equation your integrity is compromised. as I said in my post, I have been paid money for music but as it has never been my main source of income I have never had to let the purse-holder dictate to me what should be played which does happen to me in my regular "creative" job. I was just talking from personal experience and the system I employ. I know some people are lucky enough to be able to have both creative freedom and be paid a living wage to do so. It's just not been that way for me.
 23.
Whenever I play music, I'm playing for free..... What I get paid for is travelling, lifting, waiting, and generally putting up with crap from 'customers'. It's important to decide what you're getting paid to do, and what you do for your soul Si
this. when I was young I had two passions, design and music. I decided to make design my way of generating income. This meant that I have had to compromise my creativity regularly throughout my career. I decided that my music would not be compromised by adding money into the equation. This is not sot say that I have never been payed for my musical contributions but it has always been on my own terms. How do people feel about other creative areas where this could, perhaps, be seen as an issue? Banksy vs Hirst for example.
