1. Have never tried a 3Leaf Proton but I have the both MXR filter and the 3Leaf GR2 - both very usable but both very different.
Personally I prefer the GR2 because it has a better range of options compared to the MXR but the MXR is more 'PnP'; you can get a decent tone from the MXR pretty much without doing any tweaking where the GR2 is a little bit more 'hands on', is capable of getting much wetter and funkier (IMHO) than the MXR, can sweep up and down and can be set to Low Pass or Band Pass where MXR doesn't do up/down (not that I use that feature much, if at all!) and is set at Band Pass.
I have both the MXR & the GR2 on my board - the MXR set to Band Pass and the GR2 set to Low Pass - and use them for different applications. Both great filters
I can only assume the 3Leaf Proton will be a decent filter too but I tried a 3Leaf Wonderlove based on my love of the GR2 and found it to be somewhat lacking, nowhere near as usable as the GR2 (again, IMHO) so it was sent packing.

2. This is definitely pre-MKIV, personally I'm leaning towards MKIII. These are fantastic heads; the early Trace stuff sounds great and is built to last. I'm still using the same MKV AH150 & 1048 cab I bought new in 1985/86. The only thing I've had done in terms of servicing is replacing the plastic input jacks with metal ones - nothing else has needed to be replaced or fixed.
Drop Thornybank a line - he's a bit of a Trace Elliot expert and I'm sure he'll fill in the gaps for you.

just to see what everybody is bleating on about having not watched the brits i decided to search it on youtube

i made it to 1:40

tis one thing to sing with such style (or affectation if you prefer) but regardless of her unique err style, her delivery comes across as weak and lame possibly overawed by the occasions and the expectation to deliver imho ymmv mcton etc etc

as an aside. not being one to personally dabble in the vocal arts these days, does a vocal style like that present issues with autotune?

I have no idea who this lass is so thought I'd watch the clip just to see for myself - I managed all of 29 seconds before I had to turn it off. My colleagues were looking at me rather oddly while I was screwing my face up and laughing!

6. I love the pic with the bloke (seller?) holding what I imagine to be the bass in its "...genuine customised Dean padded gig bag with large front pocket".
That's some shirt he has and I seriously hope he has shorts or at least some underwear on as well!

7. I have both on my board; the MXR is band pass and can't be altered so I have the GR2 set to low pass. I use the GR2 on it's own for funk stuff while I pair the M82 with fuzz/OD and octave for synthy nonesense.
Both are really great filter pedals IMHO with plenty of great features & usable tones but if I had to choose one over the other it would be the GR2. It's just so much more versatile and has the ability to be band pass or low pass with an internal switch. Not really that useful in a gig situation I grant you, hence the M82 still being used.
When I heard about 3Leaf's other filter pedal - the Wonderlove, which I believe replaced/superseded the GR's - I went out and bought one on the basis it had a BP/LP switch mounted on the top of the unit for easy switching in a gig situation and an external gain control (GR2's is internal) plus it was billed as the best filter Spencer could create. Unfortunately it didn't live up to the hype and I sold it shortly after.
Bottom line; if you can find a used GR2 then buy it but the MXR M82 is definetly a great filter pedal so shouldn't be ruled out.

8. Spencer at 3Leaf has a new fuzz called 'You're Doom' coming out.

Here's his post on TB: http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f36/3leaf-audio-club-episode-2-a-957647/index25.html#post14996868

"It's essentially the opposite of the Duality. Here's how I look at them: The Duality takes traditional idea of a fuzz and executes it in a totally unique way, while the You're Doom turns the idea of a fuzz on its head.

You're Doom responds to your playing dynamics. You're Doom plays well with other pedals and doesn't care if your bass is active or passive. You're Doom sounds like a square wave came straight from your pickups.

It's called a "dynamic harmonic device" because it's just that - extremely sensitive to dynamics. You can "play it" the way you would play an envelope filter or a compressor."

Too many nice pedals coming out..!

To be honest, I am more interested in the 3Leaf offering :)
I'm a huge fan of 3Leaf too and (I believe) Spencer is somewhat involved with Darkglass now? On paper at least, this fuzz should be quite interesting - vintage/synthy/gated and modern in the same pedal? I'm looking forward to hearing some soundclips.
So 3Leaf/Spencer is releasing an octave pedal? Bugger!
