T'was a great day, as I recall, especially your talk...

We were all sat there ever so reverential and eager to learn. .. 🧑‍🎓😁

Hope all's well with you btw, Si....

    All good ta!!

Finally got s decent recording of my band live, and now they want me to record them properly.

    It's only taken 13 years 🫠

    How's you????

Despite what @petebsaid in his reply to this comment of yours @Sean, back at the 4th South East Bass Bash in 2010, @s1m0n gave a fantastic - and dare I say, legendary - presentation about the joys of using compressors... 😁

Sadly the photos aren't available any longer, but have a look here for more info:

Holy shit, 15 years ago 🤪

Good to hear from you @51m0n! I've missed your erudition on all things compressor related! Hope life is treating you well, and the music is still being made with your band?

    Cheers matey!

Life was a bit crap for about a year or so - hyper stressful workplace political shenanigans - picked up now, new job helping a lot!

Tracking drums tomorrow with the band (well enough of it to make sense)!!! Using the X32 with a couple of digital stage boxes.

Nice sounding room, 28 tracks for drums, bass, keys (6 tracks for the keys!), and guitar, with a hint of guide trumpet. No messing!

Wanting a live-ish sound so doing this in a huge function room with heavy drapes over the windows for a guerilla live room. We've recorded there before and I was super impressed with how the room sounded.

Going to experiment with some of Moses Schneider's really incredible drum mic-ing techniques , because, well I can with 32 channels of input to futz about with.

Specifically his snareo, droom and wurst mics will be added to the normal setup. Plus a couple of more standard room mics (a huge old figure 8 ribbon well out front, and an LDC in phase with it)

With our music I've alwasy wanted to be able to drastically change the character of the drums through track sections and never had the mics to do that well - well tomorrow I might :D

    Wish me luck!!!

  4. Run an x32 for recording onto windows no problem. Have had great success with the xr18 too.

X32 with the x-live card is mental though, 48KHz 32 bit floating point to the sd cards, and usb at the same time (albeit at 24 bit).

So far it's been spot on.

My windows laptop is a bit of a beast though, ROG Zephyrus with 32 GB of RAM.

I use Macs for work too btw

  5. Yeah, because anyone can be

But, they would need to find a

    Bassist

    Live and recording sound engineer

    Poster manufacturer

    PA

    Band secretary and cat herder

So, that's probably why my band members haven't bothered yet 🤣

Gents, maybe a bit of a noob question but picking up on @EBS_freak's point about aux feeds for subs...any reason we can't apply hpf/lpf on the desk to route a sub 120Hz aux output to the Sub(s) and supra 120 Hz (via the main outs) to the Tops?

In which case the Alto TS 12 would be back in the game 😄

Nope, assuming your desk supports that

It's more faff, you need to watch the Q on both filters, gentler slope and the same crossover point is probably your best starting point. Oh and unlike IEMs/monitors you want a Post fader send usually

You are sacrificing an aux out/matrix or however you end up implementing it, but you also get the advantage of choosing what to bother to send to that channel - which can mean not having to worry so much about high passing lots of channels

  7. The band must know the songs inside out.

However well rehearsed you think you guys are, you can be better rehearsed still.

Record your practice time on your phone, listen back for areas to work on.

    Do what the engineer wants.

Do not over eq your bass sound, let him do the eqing.

    Have fun!

  8. Focusrite Compounder was what I used to use in my rack

    Dbx160

    Drawmer

    Joe Meek

    1176

    La2a

Whatever you can find thats decent project to pro studio will work.

Less is more for on stage always on compression,  the devil is in the detail of the attack and release times. Keep the ratio low and take the threshold down till you get at absolute most 3dB of compression.

    30 to 50ms attack

    60 to 100ms release

You shouldn't really hear or feel it much until you play in a mix and at that point it just adds a bit of punch and clarity to everything IME

  9. Band played a blinder, ridiculously great reaction from a very hot and sweaty crowd in Hastings.

    New tracks went down superbly.

Old hands who have seen us many times repeatedly told us it was the best gig we had played there and the second set was particularly brilliant. Apparently it highlights all sorts of different variations of funkiness whilst always sounding like us.

Got paid well by the venue and the tip jar was stacked as well.

All in all an absolute belter of a gig 🤩

I wonder how many people will HAVE to swap over because they can’t possibly gig with ‘only’ 48khz. 😇

    Higher sample rates drop latency

That's the only possible advantage IMO

And it's very tenuous since there's nothing wrong with the XAir latency at all.

    CQ-20B, competing with the XR18, is £780. £220 more than the XR18. That's quite a price differential.

In fairness, the tech thet have in there is a decade newer than the x series.

Whether that really translates to more useful in the intended setting or not I couldn't comment.

But on paper the hardware is significantly more powerful.

Doesn't do ultranet though, so no good to me.
