1. See this is what I mean. How confusing. I shall take this straight to the head of department. Hold the Non-linear Schrödinger equations! We have basses to pluck!
2. The electronics parts arent the prob. Its finding matching Purpleheart thats gonna be ugly. Its Either way too much or way too little. But I think I may have found a decent supplier who will give me more fitting sizes. Ill email mighty mite people see what they think. A bypass might be an idea seeing as this is gonna end up being some quite complicated electronics. I think now seeing as im getting more serious, this thread may have to be moved to build section, or ill start a new thread. I have a template now for the pickguard. If you look at a pic of the mighty mite board the pots are ready set into it, however my plan is to remove them, then rewire the terminals to the concentric pots as planned out. This means ill be free to move the preamp within the cavity, hopefully giving enough space add the modboards. Ill have to work out a big nasty schematic now.
3. Ive pretty much decided, thats how the wirings gonna be, im gonna keep the migth mite, serves me fine atm, run everything off one batt, cram everything in the cavity, replace all the current knobs, with concentrics, add the switches, and im gonna try source some purpleheart wood so I can have a pickguard matching the fretboard/neckwood. Just havin a lil trouble findin suppliers now.
4. Also the more force exerted down on the bridge to the body by the strings can affect the ease of bending. Apparently. So i'll look into that too.
5. Oops, typed the wrong way round according to this. The less string you have outside of the bridge and nut the higher the tension. Apparently. This topic has been disputed quite alot. By luthiers, guitarists, and now Phycisists. So I scoured the 1000's of papers I have access to, and it turns out that by increasing the length of a guitar string on the outside of the actual free oscillating area, when bending the string the stress forces are distributed along a longer length of the cables core (outside the actuall strumming bit) whcih make the string actually easier to bend.(In equal scale lengths) I suppose this makes sense, seeing as the strings are free to move over the bridge and nut, when you pluck a string, some of the transverse stresses can be exerted out of the actual oscillating section of the string, and reduce the tension, whereas for a string whcih ends at the bridge and nut, the same amount of stresses must be displaced over only the oscillating section of string. However im not quite convinced by this, so.. I think im gonna run a couple of tests with an oscilloscope to work out the tensions to find a conclusive result because this has been bugging me for a while. No one has given proof, and all the arguments seem plausible. And when Ive asked luthiers before, ive been given counter acting answers. Unless someone can post a solid conclusion here.
6. Ok, late night boredom and paint always mean fun. Behold what i have in my head.
7. Having said that, replacing the mighty mite could be an option. Well here's now what im thinking of as a layout, if i rewire all my pots to be concentric, i could keep all the preamp controls (not necessarily the same preamp) and only have to add the switches, just not sure where. If this would run off the one 9v batt, could save alot of time. Still not sure on the scratchplate?
8. Oh ok, ill see if i can find the specs online
9. the plan is 1 stacked concentric pot per effect (2 controls), and 1 switch each, unless i can find push/pull stcked concetric pot. Also, would using just the 1 battery only affect the battery life and not performace, otherwise that is a huge step overcome. My 7 i love. Its the only bass i can imagine gigging 1000 times endlessly without giving me crap. It plays beautifully has a huge range of possibilities of how you can play it, let alone notes, its well balanced, solid, has a fantastic neck, well constructed and looks stunning. Oh and as a kinda thing me and my guitarist have goin on, we like kill switches, so im gonna stick one in for the hell of it. Thanks for the suggestions guys.
10. woah now I've seen a touch screen guitar. Has life any more surprises
11. Thanks SJA (Nice pic btw) Do you know what those white things below the bridge are for? I got scared and thought theyre some sorta touch screen interface, before i realised thats quite obscene.
12. Well if I use switches/pull pots either way it doesnt matter, i've come to the conclusion after much thought that essentially its no different then changing the pickup selector, or active/passive half way through a song. just a quick flick of the wrist. Thats the best I could come up with, the other thing is, I suck at using pedals. This for me is a challenge when im playing live, so invariably youll never see me play with pedals live. I just lack the co-ordination to use my feet at the same time as playing. However if anyone can come up with a better idea then effectively deal with it, please do. We could be pioneers here!
13. Im quite tempted to get an EUB now just to play Primus. And for 250 quid. Bargain.
14. hmm, intriguing. That could be an option. Cheers.
15. Btw, any pics of this build and good luck!
16. From what im told and experience but mostly opinion - through body gives a meatier tone, and higher tension, whereas standard gives a more punchy tone and a standard tension. Cant think of cons either way. Ive never had any problems with either. So if you like drop tuning, maybe go with string through. Just my 2 pennies/cents
17. Using modboards (checked out my guitarists ones so its all cushty) I plan to build in delay and a compressor limiter to my Conklin Gt-7 bass. Problem is.. not enough space inside. The conklin is already active so I will have to add a second 9v battery. The sizes of the boards can be found on their site http://store.guitarfetish.com/modboards.html under the FAQ. And will almost fit inside the existing cavity. My problem is the boards and the extra Battery and the need for extra knobbing is restricted by the size of cavity and space I have to wire around. So my solution was to have the cavity enlarged and (maybe) have a scratchplate added for aesthetics, the ability to add more knobs and the abiltiy to increase cavity space under the face of the guitar. Another solution was to cram (alot) and find a way of replacing the 9v chunky bastards with a slim line batt like the camcorder ones. but I have no idea where to source them or what theyre called. So help opinions and ideas please. BTW Please no opinions on delays used for basses, compressors or limiters, 7 string basses, the type of music I intend to use this for. Thats for another thread. If you want to know why I cant settle for pedals, its irrelevant and eccentric.. but I hate pedals and would like the ability to have the only 2 effects I use to be built in so I dont have to carry extra little cables and spare batteries around to jam nights and gigs etc. And for some reason pedals hate me. Every time I use them live or privately they play up. Cheers Ash Edit- Spelling errors and Happy New Year (Im still suffering)
18. Well I thought he was quite interesting and original. Just me?
19. haha, funnily enough i dotn name em after exes. Bad decision. Bad. Although julia is after a very pretty greek girl i know.
20. If you look at ym sig, you'll see the rather interesting and pointless names i have for my collection.. so does anyone else give names?
21. That is a very interesting and unique guitar. I love it.
22. Ciao, come va? Un altro italiano. E un piacere. Felice Anno Nuovo per domani. Stai Attento Ash
