  1. Y Viva Espana - Sylvia
  2. He did seem to go through a period when his voice sounded like it was shot, but then appeared to improve again. Didn’t he have some throat surgery or something? In my view his early work was when his voice sounded at it’s best (as is the case with most singers to be fair) but at 75 years of age he still can cut it. I think we believe singers should be able to maintain the same standard they achieved 40 or 50 years later, which is totally unrealistic really. Unless you’re Tom Jones of course.....😉
  3. I actually think he is / was pretty good. Unusual voice and great phrasing, reminiscent of his heroes like Sam Cooke and Otis. Sure, his pitching has always been a bit hit and miss, and his American Songbook phase was (to me anyway) pretty dire, but will always remain one of my favourite singers.

  20. Good point. The Proclaimers got to number 3 in the US singles chart with (I’m gonna be ) 500 Miles, although I’ve no idea what they made of some of the lyrics. Also some of the Liverpool bands from the 60’s who sang with local accents did okay over there I think, maybe on the back of The Beatles success? Gerry and the Pacemakers spring to mind with ‘Ferry cross the Mersey’.
  21. Knock three times - Tony Orlando and Dawn. (Sorry!)

  24. Just got a Ticketmaster email which includes tickets now on sale for my band playing in York in April 2021. Can’t see it happening TBH, but I will optimistically note it down to put in my next year’s diary. It will be the first entry. 😕
  25. Now is the time - Jimmy James and the Vagabonds
