    Dear admins,

I’ve received a warning because I sought advice about vintage parts I have, but not sure what they are worth. I will accept your warning, but it came with no advice as to how I should ask this forum about value etc? I feel that an open forum should be just that, but if there are implied rules or restrictions, maybe an admin’s knowledge should be given for further reference. Much respect, a long time member, Matt 🫡

    Hi Matt,

I am concerned that you say the warning gave no advice?  The below text was included in the informal warning you have acknowledged:-

    Hi there!

Don't panic - this isn't a 'warning' as such - just a note to say that on Basschat we don't allow 'what's it worth' type posts in the open forum, because sometimes people use them to post items for sale without placing an advert.  Subscribing members have access to a special valuation forum in the classifieds section, which is the best place to ask something like this.

If you're still struggling to value your item, have a look on here by searching for your item in the marketplace forum, perhaps someone has sold one before. Another idea is to check eBay for 'completed' and 'sold' items. If you still can't find out, ask yourself what's it worth to you? You can list it with a rough (and realistic) price, then ask for offers in that range.

We are working on a 'value your kit' service but in the meantime if you are really struggling for a price please feel free to email any details, including a picture or two if possible to [email protected] and we'll do the legwork for you.

Did you not see this?  As this would be an issue that the Admin team need to pick up as a bug.

You missed off artificial scarcity :)

I don't begrudge success, but as a businessman I don't like how he operates, ever since Darkglass Gate.  But that aside, I wasn't saying it in a negative way, more just astounded.

Why is it so pricey? I can conceivably understand why the octabvre and photon are as tjose are more specialist items, but isn't this just a distortion pedal? What makes it special?

I've never looked into it although i docthink they octabvre sounds great. Maybe the best octave I've heard (online)

Funnily enough, I actually think the opposite.  The Octabvre and Photon are just clones of other pedals, tweaked of course, whereas the Doom is actually something original, I think anyway.

Sometimes this happens early on too: I picked up my Prophet 10 for less than the Prophet 5 (from the same store) only about 4-6 weeks after it launched. It went back up by several hundred thereafter.

The new one has been selling very well, they haven’t stopped shipping out units since the launch.

What did you get instead? Pedal or keyboard?

It's promising to hear that they're selling well at least!

Pedal(s), I've gone for an Octavius Squeezer/OC-2 combo, with a bunch of modulation blocks on the Quad Cortex.  I'm absolutely in love with the Chunk, the filter and fuzz circuits are outstanding even before considering the VCO, and despite the interface from hell, I actually love being able to program everything on the pedal itself, without an external interface.

They’re listing them on their website for £3195….so they’re gonna need to be hand built IMO. It mentions that they are ‘USA Master Series’, but stops short of saying where they’re built.

Edit: Had to dig, but elsewhere on the site it states that “The Master Series lineup is designed and crafted in Southern California”.

    Si

The price is about right really, considering the costs of the far east Dingwalls and similar.  Basically the same cost as a new StingRay, so even at production line level rather than handbuilt, its still not overpriced really, provided it is indeed built in the US.

And it’s not uncommon at all for the launch price of a product to be 10-20% higher than later on once more units have sold. I don’t think anyone who has already bought one is feeling ripped off.

I'd agree after a year of sales perhaps, but a few weeks? And I assume the number of units sold so far won't be massive.  I dunno, I didn't buy one, but I think i'd be peeved if I did.  Hell, the Quad Cortex came down by £100 after two years of me owning one and I was irked by that 😂

It's interesting, as around a month ago I was strongly considering buying one of them, had it in the basket etc, but I ruled it out as I couldn't stretch my budget past £300.  I went a different synth route instead (a route I'm VERY happy with) so its no longer a goer for me, but yeah, if they'd sold it direct for that price, I'd be part of the club by now.

it's still the intro price and they've not increased it?

The shop price is delivered and includes VAT.  I think at the intro price ordered direct it landed at around £330, based on a calculation I saw a few pages ago.

So yeah, the first buyers given the special pre-order deal seem to have paid a 30% or so chunk more than anyone can presumably order one now, which I find odd to say the least.

  8. 3 hours ago, Quatschmacher said:

I think they were €229 as a special launch price. Standard is €299.

I may be mistaken, but i'm 99.9% sure the intro price was 299 euros, regular price 359 euros, plus a hefty shipping charge and the fees that come with it.

£258 delivered is a massive saving.  What's going on?

maybe because it's out of stock ?

probably put the price up when they actually get some in

May well do, but they're still selling them now.

I ruled it out as I had it landed in the UK at somewhere around £330-£350 including VAT duty , fees etc, and that was the special cheap pre-order price...

I think I'd be more than miffed if a few weeks after I supported the launch, they were available at a shop for almost 30% cheaper.

I'm very happy with it! It plays and sounds great as it is, and a cleanup, wax polish and oiled fretboard did wonders for the looks:

It's quite unusual to get Bubinga with that kind of figuring on an eighties Thumb.  It's a real special example, congrats!

'To be fair on you, Chris did say it had just sold when I called the shop originally but I was very pushy, prepared to pay more and I rarely take no as an answer so you can blame me!'

I can't see the discussion, but my word, being a gent would be an absolute struggle in response to that if it was me.

Not great is it. That buyer in the US might have just lost out on his dream bass. Shame on the shop. Imagine if one of us had bought a bass there only for them to renege on the deal and sell it to a higher bidder, proper name-and-shame moment.

You know, I totally didn't pick up on this part of the story, got distracted by the almost-bargain aspect.

Yeah, that's gross, from both parties but mainly the shop for me for agreeing to it.  They haven't come out well from this at all.

  13. I've had a play with it now, was expecting more of an overhaul of the UI given the move from 10 to 11 but I guess I'm happy its mostly just polished here and there.

Had a go of the stem splitter on one of my own tracks, and I'm actually really impressed with how the drums and vocals came out in a pretty dense metal mix.  Bass not very useable and having everything else lumped as "guitar" is a shame, but it has potential.

I feel for this to have any value it has to be factual,

    1. I did ask for a valuation in 1st post, it was a mistake on my part.

I had been off site for many years due to my illness and just wanted some advice. I guess I just wanted to converse bass with someone like you do in a bar or a bus stop.

    2. The warning was issued and acknowledged by me.

    3. A person advised if I cut out the pics and any mention of sale it would be OK, I could then ask for advice.

I asked what section and was told General Discussion.

    4. I followed this advice and put up an edited 2nd post as advised. This was subsequently removed without any explanation.

    5. Assumptions were made that I was trying to gain a sale by avoiding the £7 fee which was DEFINITELY NOT the case, I just wanted to get some ideas and pointers and CHAT BASS.

    6. Some posts go up supporting my position and some post go up saying the rules have to be followed which is fair enough, we live in a democracy.

    7. The point is, being housebound and seeing only my family for 2 years I just wanted to chat about bass (it's called bass chat I thought) and maybe pick up some knowledge along the way. Yes I do want to sell one of my P basses but this WAS NOT the intention of the 1st post!

If you can get out to see people, go to gigs or God forbid play bass at gigs then good on you........ I used to be able to do that!

    8. These are the FACTS and I cringe when certain people make assumptions and say 'I'm just following rules'

    9. To the members who could see I wasn't trying to cheat the system a big thank you!

    Nick

The thing is Nick, I'm struggling to see why you appear to have any animosity with the Basschat Admin/Mod team.  We explained the situation to you as you have now acknowledged, you unfortunately followed some bad advice from a non-moderator on here which caused us to have to act again.  You have not been accused of anything by the team, and our informal warning text is very clear to highlight this and offer help, but somehow you appear left with a negative opinion with us and how the site is run, which I think is what is causing such confusion and frustration with Ped and the rest of the team.

If that's what actually happened - i.e. the thread was removed with no explanation given - then it's no surprise the OP raised another one. Perhaps a better response might have been a mod post in the thread restating the forum rules about valuation, and then a thread lock? That's transparent, and it would've been a useful reminder to everyone else who'd responded to the thread as well.

Of course this is just my 2p, with none of the facts to hand 😉

He would have received the full explanation that has been reposted a couple of times in here.  If he didn't receive this, then this is a bug we can look at for him if he lets us know, but it shows at our end as sent and acknowledged. :)

Unfortunately, like many forums, rules like this have to be in place i'm afraid, site runnings costs sadly don't pay for themselves, and it is still an AWFUL lot cheaper to sell stuff here than certain other online marketplaces ;)
