1. I have a second opinion and it seems its most likely to be an over heating issue. The most likely culprits are either the thermal switches or the transistors. If its thermal switches its not too expensive. If its transistors it will be pretty pricey.
2.
Did he say what the problem was? I'm not trying to question the abilities or honesty of the guy in Nobles But I had a small "issue" shall we say, when I took an amp there.... Have you tried John Turner, who works with Dave Dearnaley in their workshop in Splott? Sometimes John will take the whole thing apart, rather than throw a whole board away. He does have a lot of spares, from "dead" amps and cabs, and there might be something he can use / adapt... Worth a try. I'd rather trust someone who just fixes amps, and doesn't have a shop and therefore an interest in selling you a new amp... EDIT: Yes, I'd say Clive seems honest, and isn't a pushy salesman-type But I got the feeling he really didn't want to fix an old amp I had he said he just grounded it properly, so it was safe (I hadn't asked him to do that) and then didn't fix the actual problem....
Does John have a website or facebook or something? I'll contact him see what he says. EDIT: Just spoke to Dave. He said it would be worth repairing and to take it in tomorrow for John to have a look at it.
3. Nobel's is highly regarded as being a very reliable place for repairs and without getting any form of hard sell if he deems it not worth repairing in this area. He said he will run through exactly what needs doing to it tomorrow when I go to collect it. I could get another opinion but if I'm honest Clive is normally pretty spot on with stuff like this.
4. Yea Ive bought amps and stuff used before and havnt had an issue. Maybe I was just unlucky.
5. Yes went to Nobels in Cardiff and he's said its not worth repairing. My budget is around £250 and reliability is a big one for me. Need something that will be used in playing all sizes of gigs so something plenty of guts. Been looking at a new LH500 for around £225. Any other suggestions? I think after this experience I'm a bit more competent in what to look for in used heads. But I'm of similar opinion to Lw. Cabs I'm happy buying used but heads are a little more technical if they go wrong. I didn't buy the Eden from here it was from Gumtree but I did test it out and seemed ok to me. Maybe worth looking at what's on around here. As you said look at items sold by people with plenty of positive feedback.
6. Im in a bit of a pickle. My Eden Nemesis head which I bought used has given up the ghost after only a few months. I'm in the market for a new head but do I try buying used again or go brand new? The advantages of buying used it you get more for your money but with the risk of not knowing how well the item has been treated and if any potentially big repair bills are just around the corner. Buying new means you wont get quite as much for your money but your covered with good warrantees and guarantees and the knowledge that you're the first person to use it. What do you guys suggest?
7. Is there anyone in the Cardiff and the vale area who could teach me how to set up my basses? I know the jist of it and I can do basic stuff but it would be nice if someone could help me understand how and why it works. I am aware there are plenty of tutorials on Youtube ect. But I learn things so much faster if I have someone in front of me who can show me and I can ask questions. Cheers!
8. Bought a Squire VM Jazz V off Joe. Great communication. Even went out of his way to come out further to meet me. Great guy to deal with and wouldn't have any issues doing business with him again! Also very good at respraying basses! Loving the burgundy mist relic!
9.
Ah, that one was mine! And tnose pickups. I installed them and removed them - didn't make any difference to my ears. A cracking, easy to play bass which should still havr a set of Chromes on it, no?
In that case Ill probably leave these pickups in! It did have Chromes but I requested some rounds to be put on for the type of music I play.
10.
I know what you mean, but some combinations are just classic; Like the maple board and black block inlays on that very neck, or Rosewood fretboard with pearl blocks.... For me, that colour pink and white guard look great - it's a nice contrast and classic look, but striking at the same time You could try some experimenting in Photoshop? Take a straight on view of the body and change the pickguard by overlaying photos from pickguard manufacturers website? Worth a try? Cheers again
Good idea! Never thought of that plus will save me a tonne of money buying pickguards lol
11.
You know... sometimes the best solution is to just do nothing and leave things as they are...
I know and I do love it how it is anyway. But I do like to experiment as well!
12. I'm thinking maybe even a colour pickguard that matches the maple fretboard. What colour would that be classed as? (please don't say maple coloured!)
13.
Very nice! Although I'd probably switch the pickguard.
I was thinking black?
14. My two new acquisitions! A Squire VM P Bass 5 and a Squire VM Jazz 5
15. Picked up my 2nd bass of the day last night. A Squire Vintage Modified Jazz 5 string in a custom Burgundy Mist relic finish. First things first it looks stunning! A very unique colour and love the relicing. Definitely going to stand out when on stage with my band. As with the VM P 5er I picked up earlier in the day I cant get over how well they feel to play. The neck is very comfortable and is easily on par with the TRB II 5 I owned. Sound wise it has that typical jazz sound. Plenty of mid bark and low end oomph that will cut through very nicely in a mix. Overall I'm very pleased and I cant wait to take both the P and the Jazz to the gig later on this week! Pictures! 16. Yea man thats my NBD part 2 as I picked it up last night! Got a custom paint job on it as well. Looks stunning. Will sort out pictures in a bit! Yea I ended up selling my TRB II 5 string to fund these too and you know what. Play ability, playing comfort and overall feel and sound of these to VMs are on par with it! I'm totally sold on VMs and cant really imagine justifying paying an extra £700+ on a US Fender would be THAT much difference
17. Picked up my Squire Vintage Modified 5 string P-bass today from Raslee! (Great guy by the way!) Brought it home and straight away plugged it into my 75 watt Fender practice combo and oh my what a stunning sound it produces! With tone rolled off it produces a lovely thick but still refined thump. Roll the tone up to max and you get a great mids bark with plenty of low end to back it up. The B string feels awesome and has just as much presence as every other string with very good sustain. The neck feels just as comfortable to play as my TRB 5 string did. Cant get over how happy I am with this. I know the VM Squires have always been highly regarded and I totally understand why! Cant believe its taken me all the time to own one. Totally sold on it. So much bang for your buck. Lee was also kind enough to include the USA P pick ups which I shall be installing very soon! Cant wait to try them out as well. Pictures! Never been a massive sun burst fan but this one is definitely the exception! Part 2 to come later once I've picked up the next one
18. Aquired a Squire VM P Bass V from Lee. Absolutely great guy! Quick to respond to messages and texts and very fair when working out a deal. Met up with him to do a trade. Would have no issues at all doing business with him again! Hope you enjoy the gig tonight!
19. Ive found that since playing 5s I've been exploring parts of the necks that I never really went near before as you're not so up and down the neck.
20. I moved over to 5 strings a few years ago as I felt the extra range would be useful within my band. I don't use that low B very much but its nice to know its there when I want to use it. When you play those low notes it really cuts through and adds a new dynamic to the overall sound of the band. Plus it serves as a very handy and comfortable thumb rest!

24. Thats great thanks ill check the manual .
25. Tonight ill be using my new rig at practice. An Eden Nemesis 650NA head into an Ashdown 4x8 and a 1x15. Both are 8ohm. When hooking up the cabs can you connect one cab to the other and then attach one cab to the head? Does that give the same result as connecting both cabs straight into the head? Both cabs are able to handle the load no problem. Cheers.
