I forgot to say, on the down side, they have a tendancy to break their footswitches. Mine's no exception, and is currently awaiting a replacement. Once done, I believe they're fine from then on.

Superb little pedal. Big bottom end boost, big clear, crisp highs, it makes an average rig sound fantastic, and makes a great rig sound massive. It doesn't boost volume levels at all, it just widens the spectum of tones, more bottom, more top. I reviewed mine on the old Bassworld site, and I likened it to this: Imagine your sound as an accordion half open, then you switch on the Aphex, and then imagine you stretch open the accordion as far as it'll go. That's what the pedal does to your sound. I hope that makes sense.

As in other simillar threads, I'd say the same thing..........Squier Vintage Modified Jazz and Yamaha BB414, both great basses.

Most people have already said it but........... Squier Vintage Modified Jazz, Yamaha BB414, Schecter Model T, all great basses. Don't let your stepdad decide for you though, go and try a few in the shops and decide for yourself, you'll know what you like the best only by listening to them with your own ears. For what it's worth, if it was me, the Squier would be favourite.

I tried the DOD FX25 as you know Steve, I had yours, but I couldn't get on with it. I can't afford Boutique level stuff either, but I just need a giggable filter to use on a couple of songs, nothing fancy, but something with a nice useable [i]downward[/i] wah. Would the MXR do that do you reckon? Or maybe a Maxon AF9?

How does the MXR Auto Q measure up?

I think it's better to try a load of them first, then make a decision. I depends how much you've got to spend too. The Wesley looks nice, no idea how it plays though as I've never tried one, and that's the problem, you need to try them first, not rely on how it looks, I've tried some basses that look stunning and play like a drain, and I believe that could put a new player off the instrument. New or old, whatever you go for, try before you buy.

Yes, go and try some basses in some shops, as many as you can to get a feel for what you like the sound of. When you've found something you like, then start looking on ebay and on here for some used basses. My advice is don't buy new, as most used basses have already had a setup etc, something a new bass won't have, I'd go for a second hand bass, preferably from here as most people here are good honest folk. Don't just buy the first bass you see, and don't be tempted to buy a bass you've never played. Your first bass really needs to be comfortable for you, because if you buy something you don't like, you've lost your money and you'll be put off playing bass altogether, and we don't want that!! TAKE YOUR TIME, and try LOADS of basses before you buy anything!!!

Those Trabens are wicked, I've never seen one in the flesh, but I love those bridges. They did one with a large sun shape for the bridge, it looked fantastic.

Last I heard, our own (or at least, bassworld's own) Janek Gwizdala was playing bass for Mike Stern.

Does anyone play Hysteria live? How hard is it to learn? I've got a bet on with someone to see who can have it gig ready first, it sounds complicated on first listen, and difficult to pick the notes out.
