Good tune Tandro, on hearing that this came straight to mind , old classic

Classic! I would venture to say this would be the best known song on the Stalag riddim

  3. Its Dancehall Friday...and I'm gonna do something a little different. I'm going with some Americans!

Bornjamericans had a string of hits back in the day...on well worn riddims of course :P Enjoy some 90's US Dancehall vibes this weekend.

  4. Ok, granted I am no connoisseur and I should really try some different ones, I just gravitate to 'Angostura 1919' if its rum. Thats done it for me for decades (which reminds me I need to stock a bottle at home again).

But to be honest, my poison of choice is Scotch and Coconut water any day.

Most people who have not grown up on that seem not to like it and give me funny looks, but hands down I will take that any time (caveat though...sorry, the coconut water we get in the UK that comes from Thailand and Asia etc just does not taste the same as coconuts from the Caribbean).

  5. Ah @Reggaebass, some Marlon Asher from my neck of the woods 😜 and fitting for Dancehall Friday!

This song is what launched him onto the scene back in the day, the whole country was vibin to this in fetes, radio, everywhere. Good memories...

I'm off to see Steel Pulse this week, supported by The Selecter.

Can't wait to see this again live:

Yes, I was there! Its literally been decades since I last saw them live. And I had no idea they were celebrating their 50th anniversary.

As there are already numerous Steel Pulse tunes posted here (and it is Dancehall Friday after all 😜 ) I gonna big up Cocoa Tea. I had no idea he passed away, and in between Selecter and Steel Pulse the DJ played tune after tune of Cocoa Tea. My personal favourite collab is 'Pirates Anthem', but I'll just enjoy his vibes solo this time...

Ah heck, take Pirates Anthem too...I just love this song

Saw him a couple of times a few years ago. Supurb player. Had no idea he was visiting the UK. Where ws this?

It was just a fabulous performance (and I don't really listen to slide guitar), first time I heard him live. It was a 3 night stint actually. See below:

    https://www.efestivals.co.uk/festivals/januarybluesfestival/2025

I was back and forth whether I would go, and literally a few hours before the show I bought a ticket. I must have got the last one (?) as a friend tried to get one right after me and it was sold out. I will definitely go and see him again.

I’m going with this, i remember buying it, I think you might like this Tandro, you get 5 points if you can guess which film they played it in

Nice one Reggaebass, my kinda ting! I should lie and say I knew but I'll go on the honour system as I had no idea which movie, I had to go hunt it down. I must have seen Cocktail late 80s, over 30 years now! I'll try for the 5 points next time :P

The consequences will be dire. IF AI does become truly intelligent, we're likely buggered. The absolutely true fact that humans are a HUGELY negative force on the planet will be our undoing IF AI becomes intelligent to the point of understanding that to protect the planet and all other species on it humans must go.

Yep, I saw that movie too

  10. What difference does it make if its my 199th post, or my 201st...or my 133rd? None I guess, but we all like (or maybe most of us I think?) nice round numbers. So on the momentous occasion of being a nice round number 200th post on the 1st Jan. 2025, just wanted to say that I'm hoping and praying for everyone in the BC community wherever you are in life right now, a great 2025!

Great idea Tandro, I’m up for that, dancehall covers quite a wide range starting from the late 70s onwards so we shouldn’t run out of tunes 😁, during the 90s I used to listen to a lot of Patra, so I’m going with this one

So many parties back in the day with that one when I was a 'bit' younger 😎 (And I never knew 2Pac was in that video! You learn something new everyday)

  12. So it's Friday, and I'm gonna make it unofficially Dancehall Friday :P After that 'Take a Ride' riddim last week, you all introduced me to Al Campbell. I thought I did not know anything from him (sorry folks, I don't know songs/artists/riddim names, but I'm working on it).  Anyways, it caused me to (re)find this gem from the late 90's that I had loved, but not heard in decades! So on the mellower side of Dancehall (I guess?), bounce your head to this one if so inclined.

  13. WHAT!!!

    Mind blown again gents.

The thing is I am accustomed to 90's dance hall riddims being used in tons of songs, and they are popular to me as that is what I am familiar with.

But I never expected that Richie Spice song that I've been listening to for years and was very popular when it came out, to be based on anything else. And then to now learn the Johnny Osbourne song is based on a previous one...I just find all this way cool.

Also very curious about all your ways of listening to reggae and ska. Do you have an extensive vinyl collection, or stylistically curated Spotify playlists?

I do both: I have two big playlists with respecetively vocal and dub reggae, but also have a collection of about 80 albums, mainly pre-1980. I'm very picky about what I buy on vinyl. My most prized reggae record is a 2nd pressing of Johnny Osbourne's Truths & Rights. Love that album.

To digress for a second, while I expect it from 90s Dancehall it still surprises/amazes me (though I should know better by now) when I hear a beat or rhythm that I had no idea predates a song that I listened to years ago. Never heard 'Truths and Rights' before, but it instantly took me back to Richie Spice (Youths Dem Cold). Only to realise the Richie Spice song I know contains bits from this and a Dennis Brown song I also never heard before. Thanks gents for allowing me to get to know this stuff!
