The orange is smaller but i can see it is a nice amp to use if you like that sort of tone. It got that very aggressive mids that will cut through in the band. The Roland 20XL is a good amp, i use one of them for band rehearsal in the drummer's house. It sounded decent but it wasn't the tone i was after and i prefer just to have simple 3 band EQ lol. My conclusion for buying small practice combo right now in the market (exclude second hand/discontinue product) that gives you good volume, tone and size will be: - Roland 20XL - Ampeg BA108 - Orange 25BX

The Ampeg really surprise me in terms of tone. I paid £99 in the shop for the amp which I expect it will sound ok but nothing fantastic. After I plug the bass in and play around with it I was blown out by the volume and tone for a 8" cab. Didn't think it will handle the low end that good. Look like I've found a small combo that I will really enjoy to play at home. Agree with you lozz on the ba108 that will always sound like ampeg tone no matter what I do.
Just returned from PMT in Salford. Tried the Vox Pathfinder 10, Ampeg BA 108, Orange Crush PiX CR25BX and the Roland Bass Cube 20xl. All really nice combos and the staff there really couldn't have been more helpful. Ended up going for the Cube (thanks MoonBassAlpha) as to my ears it had the best sound. No sign of any distortion at all volume levels, plenty loud enough for what I want it for, great build quality and the built in tuner and power squeezer are useful additions. The range of tones from this little thing is breath-taking. Best of all, I was able to get an exact replication of 'my sound' that I get from my gigging/full band rehearsal rig (GB STL9.0 & Berg 2x10's) straight away - just at a much reduced volume level. I have heard that Roland designed this as a bespoke bass practice amp from the ground up and put lots of thought into it rather than downscaling an existing amp range and I think that shows. PMT even price-matched Reidy's price of £145. Bit of a bargain me thinks. Happy Bunny
It was you trying all the small combo in the Salford PMT. I went their today and saw all the small combo were put in place together. I tried the vox, orange, peavey and ampeg. Hate the sound of the vox, the peavey is too quiet in my opinion but tone is ok (can't expect much from a 15watt). The orange sound ok and pretty loud but lack of low end in my opinion. I ended up buying the Ampeg BA108 because it have that ampeg sound and it sounded very loud and good low end for a 25watt 8" combo. I'm a happy Ampeg owner now

There are a few Ashdown Tourbus in the shop near me, so i probably will try some out as well.

Gorgeous new little Amp from Ashdown - CTM-15
badboy1984 replied to Grand Wazoo's topic in Amps and Cabs
I did think about this amp before i purchase the LB30. No CTM30 in the shop at that time so i can't compare it side by side. I do like the idea of having a separate gain and volume. My LB30 only have a master volume only ...... but i do like the tone of it tho -
To stir this even more i'm considering the Warwick BC20 as well. After seeing Andy's review on youtube, it seems the amp is decent. Don't know how much of this is true but the amp claims to have no distortion when crank full volume ..... on a 8" speaker.
-
The Ashdown After Eight sale on here is collection only in Birmingham and it won't worth the cost of petrol to drive down from Manchester to pick up a amp that cost £45 ......... After contacting some local shop, it seems they only have Marshall MB30, Orange BX25 and Ampeg BA108.
-
I think i need to take my bass to the shop and try it ...... i know is only a small practice amp and is cheap but i don't want to waste £100 buying a amp then having a hard time selling the amp if it doesn't work out. rather get it right straight away.
-
Lozzy, Is the ampeg feel very cheap for a practice amp? i'm scare of these 8" speaker these days because i'm afraid my bass is too hot for any practice amp ........
-
For a small ish bass amp with 10" speaker i've found the following: Hiwatt Maxewatt B20 and Marshall MB30 MKII. I use to own the Marshall MB30 and it is pretty decent actually ........ sold it ages ago when i thought is rubbish but actually i think is pretty good.

Is the orange 25 watt combo any good?
-
I can't find the sale thread for the SWR 10" combo ......

I'm looking to invest in a small bass combo to practice at home without using the big rig all the time. Also i don't want to pay couple of hundred pound for a practice combo. Sound wise i just wanted to handle both passive and active bass and the amp does not distort ...... Had a bad experience on my last one which is a warwick blue cab 15, it distort no matter what bass i play.
-
My Ashdown perfect 10 mini stack 60watt with 2x10 is probably the best low watt amp i play. This warwick blue cab 15 just put me off from buying any low watt amps now ...... The kick back style is good but the sound is way too distort for my taste even at low volume. It sounded perfect when using headphone. Must be the speaker can't handle the low.
-
I've tried all my basses and it distorts on both passive and active. I've also plug a acoustic guitar in and the sound is fine ...... i guess my bass is too hot for the practice amp ......
-
I've bought second hand practice combo today but when i plug it in it distorts ....... even at low volume and cut all the bass. Is a Warwick Blue Cab 15 Possible the speaker is damage?
-
I've traded the BH500 and a BC212 cab for something else. The amp is powerful and loud and it matches well with the TC cabs, decent and good for value amp you got their. Reason why i traded because i need to downsize so i got a ashdown all valve lb30 instead, but i still using a BC212 and the cab is good.

I've not bought one yet but looking to sometimes this week lol. Sure i will PM you my email

Who gone through simple to complex then back to simple bass?
badboy1984 replied to badboy1984's topic in Bass Guitars
Is one of those situation in life, I always had the right type of bass with me since day one but i prefer to go out and tried a bunch of different things before going back to what i have at start. I also spend tons of money during those years ....... -
When I first started to play/learn how to play bass i've use a Aria P bass copy and i really hate it for some reason. I always wanted something fancy, complex control to get my tone but i never happy. When thinking about it now i've got through the following basses: - Aria P bass copy - Squier Jazz bass - Warwick Rockbass Streamer - G & L Tribute 5 string - Ibanez BTB 6 string - Peavey Grind 6 string - Lakeland Skyline 5 string - Warwick Corvette 4 string - Warwick Corvette 5 string - Musicman Stingray 4 string And now I'm settle with my Fender P bass, Fender Jazz and AGC 5 string. Most of the time i like to use my P bass to keep it simple and lazy as well (plug and play).

Anyone tried one of these yet? By looking at the features it seems pretty good for headphone practice, jam with ipod/ipad, usb out to pc for recording and DI out as well.
-
Mac claims to be more reliable but i disagree with that, it is no different then using a window base station. I'm only a light weighted recorder on music but i do video editing at home and at work. My home PC is window and is a custom high spec one, where as my work computer is a much more expensive and powerful Mac Pro. The Mac Pro is good (who don't like it with all that power) but sometimes it will cause you problem when things is not render correctly ...... when your cheaper PC can get the job done without a problem. Both mac and window has its own problem when comes to computer world. Nothing is hassle free with computer ......
-
TC is doing buy one get one free on cabs right? The BH500 and 2x cabs would certainly be enough for 99% of the things .....
-
i use to have a bh500 and 2x bc212 cabs. the rig is loud and it will mix well in band situation. you can add another 2x12 as well to make it 6x12 rig. i tried that setup and is overkill for what i play and the venue as well. i sold the amp and one cab because i'm downsizing otherwise the rig is a killer for the price and is light as well.

I haven't tried it out properly at home yet, only tried it in shop when playing via a VS115. When i tried it out it didn't do much but it change the tone when i toggle the mid shift after the bass shift etc. If i remember correctly the EQ is passive like the spyder 550 i use to have, which means it doesn't act like a normal bass, mid, treble boost and cut EQ we usually see on most bass amps.
