the shop didn't even do research to find out the value of a Wal. - do you think they had any idea about packaging and CITEs to send a bass internationally?!

In a country where house purchased can be gazumped I find little to be worked up about when a small shop takes local money and hand delivers vs international sale and everything that entails. Not great but life is too short to get that worked about it. It's just a bass!

It’s actually very easy to send, getting it cleared the other end with the proper paperwork is a different story, as I learned from personal experience.

That must be a Paul Herman-era bass.

Without wishing to cause controversy or upset anybody, the more recent Wal basses are a different proposition to the vintage ones. Yes they cost more, but they are better made with more attention to fine detail. That's why I can't say the new basses are ridiculously overpriced. Their cost and overall quality is in line with other builders offering the best instruments money can buy.

And FWIW, for my taste only Alembic basses can rival Wal in terms of tone.

Yes, it is; from 2013 as I recall.

I think I'd agree with you about Alembic too. I've had a few and haven't played anything that's quite like them.

I'd put Ritter basses in the same class. Superbly put together and whilst they don't have a unique voice, the quality is undeniable.

There is a thread on Wal Facebook.  The guy who didn't get the bass is being a real gent about it. Peeved, but polite.  The shops reputation has suffered a little, but everyone in Wal world is still friends!  ....I think.

Mmm, just read it. I'm not sure it's the shop that should suffer with comments like this from the buyer....

'To be fair on you, Chris did say it had just sold when I called the shop originally but I was very pushy, prepared to pay more and I rarely take no as an answer so you can blame me!'

Continuing on the Deep Purple theme, I would suggest that these ladies are a cut above your average tribute band, although obviously there's one major factor which prevents them meeting the criteria of being 100% like the original band! I'd certainly place them in the "real gig" category, and suspect there's not many "tribute" acts would be playing the band's new single, released on 30th April, live on 4th May.

There's another all female Purple tribute, also very good indeed, Diva Purple!

I would, but modern powered speakers with monitor tilt handles are too wobbly.

Guitarist and I nearly came a cropper with exactly that on Saturday. We went up the front side by side for the guitar solo in The Final Countdown, feet up and planted on a monitor that felt it like to was made of cardboard. Bore no weight whatsoever. Heft-less one might say. I think we managed to style it out 😎

I was asked to learn 'Fool For Your Loving' exactly as on the record for an audition and once I sat down to listen to the bass parts, I found there were more notes than I thought! 😃 But I could have got away with playing less had they not insisted on complete accuracy.

Probably the same thought that Rudy Sarzo had. He got away with it 😎

You know, I totally didn't pick up on this part of the story, got distracted by the almost-bargain aspect.

Yeah, that's gross, from both parties but mainly the shop for me for agreeing to it.  They haven't come out well from this at all.

I guess one could argue that given that it was possibly a commission sale, that the shop had a duty to get the best price for their customer.

That should have been sorted out before it went up for sale though. I say 'sale', but it sounds like it was a blind auction.

I'd also argue the case for the buyer saying 'I understand it's sold, but let me have first refusal if things don't work out'.

But, 'I don't care if it's sold, I'll give you more money, plus you won't have to ship it internationally' sucks big time from both sides.

I have visions of there being a mirror thread on Talk Bass.

Not great is it. That buyer in the US might have just lost out on his dream bass. Shame on the shop. Imagine if one of us had bought a bass there only for them to renege on the deal and sell it to a higher bidder, proper name-and-shame moment.

That and the buyer IMHO. As bad as each other.

I immediately called up the shop at 3.20pm (they closed at 3.30pm), spoke to the owner saying I wanted to buy the Wal. He said he had already sold it to some American. I said I would pay more and it’s easier to send it & sell it to me in London than a dude in the USA. The owner said he would think about it and call me later. That evening at 9pm he called me and gave me a price to outbid the American and we agreed. The shop owner from Wales is actually coming to deliver me the Wal in-person next week… (he needs to be in London for his band’s producer apparently so an excuse for a visit haha). I’m so happy and I almost can’t believe it!!! Thank you again everyone, I’ll send a pic once I have it in my hands! :)

This sort of carry on makes me 🤮

10/8 :  "Down and Out" ? Twould make sense for a drummer to have that little meter reminder.
    No idea about Trundle.

Is 10/8 a time signature thing?

    10/8 - Down and Out

    Trundle - The Lady Lies

    Could be. Any idea why?

  11. This photo is from Armando Gallo's wonderful book 'I Know What I Like'.

It's shows Chester Thompson's bass drum and pedal with a set list taped down next to it. It doesn't mention where or when the photo was taken.

It has always confused me and I wondered if anyone knew what some of the songs are and why he referred to them that way.

Given the content of the set, it must be from the '...And Then There Were Three...' tour, but I have no idea what '10/8' or 'TRUNDLE' refer to.

The Genesis Movement show these songs as played on this tour:

    Songs Played In This Period

Eleventh Earl Of Mar, In The Cage, Burning Rope, Ripples, Deep in the Motherlode, One For The Vine, Squonk, Say It's Alright Joe, The Lady Lies, Cinema Show/Afterglow, Follow You Follow Me, Dance on a Volcano/Los Endos, I Know What I Like, Fountain of Salmacis, Down and Out, Ballad of Big, The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway/Musical Box, Supper?s Ready, Dancing with the Moonlit Knight/Musical Box
    Medleys :
    - Dancing With The Moonlit Knight / The Musical Box (Closing Section)
    - Dance On A Volcano / Drum Duet / Los Endos

I'm wondering whether 'HOME' at the end means actually home as in it may have been a date in the USA or maybe the final date of the tour (Japan)?

  12. About 15 years ago, I was deep in an obsessive mode regarding Music Man Stingray basses. I still love them, but since I've started having issues with my fretting hand, I've found life a lot easier with slightly narrower necks.

Also being a Status fan, I was on the lookout for one of the elusive NAMM Stingray Specials with the Status neck. Only 100 made and they came up for sale very infrequently.

Things happen when you least expect them and I found one for sale one day in a small music shop in the middle of nowhere.

Apparently, the guy who bought it from new didn't even know how to play bass and it had been in its case been under his bed for years.

I bought it for a very respectable price and walked out of the shop a very happy man indeed.

It as, as they are referred to around these parts, a keeper.

Slight derail - does anybody else keep a record of what they buy and sell?

Yes, I do, but only for basses, not pedals/amps/speakers. They're all contained in a single document which is quite scary to look at.

It has dates for all my current basses bar the first two as I'm a bit hazy on where from and how much as they were bought in the 80's.

Once they are gone they move to the sold section at the bottom of the list.

Well, that's me out.  With new singer comes key changes, my laziness got the better of me and I dipped my toe in the pitch shifter market.  I bought a Hotone Harmony mini pedal.

I'm not going to insult your intelligence with loopholes and justifications - while it may not be a bass specific pedal, it will be going on my pedalboard and used with basses - I don't play any other instruments.

I can now concentrate fully on keeping score...

Similarly, the inclusion of Sledgehammer into the set necessitated that I purchase an octave pedal.

Bought through the classifieds here on Basschat for £40, but I guess that dumps out of the 2024 challenge 😬

  15. Bought a pedal from Adam last week.

Great pedal and received very quickly as well as being packaged very well.

Thoroughly recommended seller. Thanks again mate.

  16. @kungfuzulu - not sure what your budget is, but this is available. Absolutely mint. I bought it for a project that should of, but didn’t happen.

Never gigged or rehearsed even and rare as rocking horse poo in this colour.
