  1. Due to a strange twist of fate, I've ended up with two of these and as good as they are, I really don't need both.

This one I purchased on this very forum a short while ago from @admiralchew and what a unit it is. The SGT switch is just nuts.

Essentially the Ampeg sound (or sounds to be more precise) without the requirement to visit a chiropractor.

It's in immaculate condition and could pass for new.

    Here is the Ampeg blurb....

The SGT-DI™ preamp and DI gives modern bassists an entire rig in a single stompbox.

It delivers an enhanced Super Grit Technology™ overdrive circuit featuring iconic Ampeg SVT® and B15 voices, versatile 3-band EQ now with sweepable Mid circuit, Ultra-Hi and 3-way Ultra-Lo switches, a variable compressor, and an Aux /Headphone section. Plus! Introducing the first IR Loader/Cab Simulator from Ampeg.

Choose from three classic factory cabs or up to three cabs of your own by using the free Ampeg IR Loader application.

3-Band EQ with sweepable Mid circuit

SGT circuit with SVT and B15 voicing switch

    Onboard IR Loader/Cab Simulator

    Ultra-Hi and 3-way Ultra-Lo switches

    Variable 10:1 compressor

Price is firm, but does include fully insured and tracked shipping. I'm not looking for any trades.

I think the Chomatron was just a development of the meatball clone series he did, Groove Regulator, Wonderlove etc?  Might not be though.

No idea about the compressor, but you may well be right with the Doom/2 being an original design?

It is 3 Leaf Audio. It’s exactly as announced on the web site along with links to those auctions.

But why do you find it odd? He's simply establishing a market price for his kit by putting it on eBay - I mean why should the folk who buy purely to resell kit on eBay make all the mark-up on his work (or to cite another example which I personally find galling, those secondary ticket resellers who buy up tickets purely to resell them at vast profits).

Surely he's free to make use of eBay along with the rest of us?

No one's forcing anyone to buy anything here.

It’s odd because it does not resolve the issue. His justification is that he’s had complaints about buyers reselling pedals at inflated prices, so his solution is to do what everyone has complained about, the only difference being, he gets the money instead. Well done Spencer 👏👏👏👏. By the way, he marketed this endeavour as ‘I’m selling these pedals at 99% off standard price’ which was the starting bid on the auction 🤷‍♂️. It doesn’t resolve what the buyers have complained about, but it does resolve what he obviously has a beef with. Now if he was passing the profits above $333 on to charity - different story.

Maintaining an order list, in my view a fairer way to do things, would be more labour intensive for him, but at least he would know where they are going and just under 100 pedals wouldn’t disappear in an instant to bot buyers. At the time, I was really frustrated with FEA Labs (more the lack of commas than anything), even though I knew I was on their waiting list, but at least they came through in the end.

I now have zero interest in passing any of my hard earned in his direction. I shall investigate other options instead.

    Sorry to hear that.

Probably not much comfort but there are other options out there. The 3Leaf stuff is pretty nice but it’s overpriced and not the only game in town for that sound. I had one and sold it about a month after I got it.

What did you go for in the end?

I’m sorry you missed out too. I think the intention is for larger releases next year so there should be more than a hundred available of each pedal throughout the year. Hopefully, with those released next year and the larger releases next year, there should be greater availability and reduced resale prices.

Yeah, that’s what he said last year. Nice to see he’s going to make a cracking profit on those ones on eBay. I do not understand the logic behind that at all.

  6. Absolutely gutted that I've once again missed out on an Octabvre.

I waited ages for Spencer to announce another run and 100 of them went live at 9am PST (5pm GMT).

I couldn't possible have got through the order process quicker than I did. The clock was still showing 1700hrs when I clicked purchase and they had sold out.

I thought FEA Labs were bad, but at least I was able to get on a list with them and they did eventually deliver.

It seems a lot of these Octabvre pedals get re-sold for profit. What's worse 3Leaf have put 7 of the 100 on eBay and they're all going way above the site price of $333.

Not a chance in hell I'm bidding any of them.

    I'll do without.

I will always love you is one song which would have me running for the off button every single time. I could just about cope with Dolly's version, but Whitney's is screechy, over sung, overbearing and overplayed to death.

Agreed. Just awful. Absolutely obliterates it.

Well I've managed to force myself to play the main riff.....  So, so dull.

I had another couple of listens to this last night, just to see if would grow on me and I was struck by how horrible the production is. It sounds very uneven, guitars too loud, not enough bass. This never helps when I’m sitting down to learn new material. If it doesn’t sound good to begin with, I’m usually less than enthused about listening to it.

This live version sounds loads better to my ears.

  9. I was just thinking about the set from my gig last night and there's maybe one song I would happily lose as it's pretty uninspiring from a playing perspective.

Ironically, it's one of those songs that always goes down well and last night was no exception (go on, have a guess which one it is).

In this band we operate a kind of checklist system:

    1. Are we all up for trying xxxx song?

    2. Are we performing it well?

    3. Is it going down well?

    4. We've played it for a while now, are we still happy to keep it?

Stagnation doesn't really feature in this band as we have another set of songs we can substitute in to keep it fresh.

In our quest to play more upbeat songs that can be danced to, The rest of the band volunteered My Sharona by the Knack.  I absolutely detested that song.  Anyway, I learnt it, for the good of the band and now I don't mind it.  If the song has a good bass line I can get behind it.

Our guitarist despises that song although he's never come up with solid reasoning as to why. I don't mind it, but I don't have a burning desire to play it.

Just a note to say Thanks to Warren.

He very kindly agreed to lend me an amp to do some recording this weekend as my Mesa has been playing up.

We agreed a time for me to collect, unfortunately due to some family circumstances I couldn't pick it up, but that doesn't change the fact that Warren was kind enough to help me out of a jam, which he didn't need to do.

So thank you mate, really appreciated! A credit to Basschat! 🙂

I’m about today if you still need the amp mate.

It's reasonably varied, and includes songs like Pet Semetary, the fast version of We Will Rock You, Fortunate Son, Everything About You, No Class, Breaking The Law etc.  The only other similar song we do is If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next, and that's done as a subtle protest about the war in Ukraine.

I absolutely get where you’re coming from in the context of the other songs you’ve cited.

I would have zero interest in learning this guitarists w**k-fest. I would definitely exercise my veto option.

My humble opinion is that ‘If You Tolerate This’ isn’t even in the same ballpark.

The guitarist(s), and I assume it’s them who really want to do it, need to get over themselves.

I dep for a few bands where I look at the sets and my heart sinks, but I’m a hired hand in those situations and have no choice.

Where you have a choice, I’d say use it.

I've been in a couple of bands where the dynamic changes and instead of us all being The Band, the singer somehow believes we have become His Band and starts treating the rest of us like minions.  That's the time to go.  Yet most other times, absolutely no issues at all.  Clearly it is nothing to do with ability, just a state of mind.  Case in point - I was in a band with a guy who is a genuinely fantastic singer and front man, the best I have ever had the pleasure of playing with, and he is the nicest fellow - team player, got time to help technophobes like me, helps with load in/out etc. @hiram.k.hackenbacker is in bands with him and would say the same I am sure.  Funny old world.

Yes, absolutely @Paul S. He's definitely a class act, as his other half actually who is also a singing teacher. Both of them selfless to a fault and see themselves as part of the big picture.

Has his own PA and there isn't much he doesn't know about the operation of them. We did our first rehearsal fully IEM'd the other week and if not for him, we would probably still be there trying to connect it all up 🤣.

I feel truly fortunate to be in bands with each/both of them.

  14. There's a bit of an 'Emperor's New Clothes' vibe in some of the comments here and I'm quite surprised.

My view, for what it's worth (probably nothing), is that ramps are essentially a more visually appealing version of a Zero Mod thumb rest.

I've used them on Ric's and most recently Stingrays and I really like them.

The single H pick-up position on a Stingray always feels fractionally too far back for me when playing finger style.

I enjoy the slightly less tension using the Zero Mod. YMMV of course.
