1. Just to close this topic, I ended up getting a replacement through Mark at Bassdirect who I bought the bass off, fitted it tonight and all is well in bass land again. Top bloke, great service, happy customer.
2.
Could you all chip in and offer to buy the guy Sunday lunch at his local each week? That would get him out of the house and solve the problem. And it's cheaper than a rehearsal studio. A bit of lateral thinking Cheers Mark
Genius!!!!!
3. Actually if I think about it the new drummer is louder than the old one but it just seems to be the cymbals rather than the rest of the kit, that caused the guitarists to turn up meaning I had to follow. Good way of quieting down cymbals? Should be able to all turn down and not have ringing ears at the end of practice if we can sort that, hopefully this and moving practice to a bit later will sort the neighbour issue. If we put up sound absorbing materials do you think it will make a difference to how we perceive the cymbals and in turn allow us to turn down? Worth doing it for recording purposes anyway I suspect but if it indirectly solves our problem that's an added bonus.
4. Just To add, already using a gramma pad. Think we might go have a word one night and see if we can work something out with schedules first off. We want to put up some sort of sound deadening material to control the reflections a bit for our working recordings anyway so would still be a useful thing to have ideas for. And no, we are not practicing in house, that would be obviously inconsiderate to most people, at least where we are it was a surprise anyone could hear us. He did say he likes the music, it's the sound checking first thing that he's not fussed on.
5. It's not a residential building, it's a warehouse, there's no other houses anywhere near. My amp is near the offending wall but pointing away from it, it did used to be the other side of the room facing that way though with no bother. Cab is the barefaced vintage pictured left. Usually use one of the tuning plugs in the port to roll a bit of low end off anyway, might try adding the second. Like the mattress idea, theres always some floating around for next to nothing locally, will check that out.
6. Firstly, no idea what section to put this in so sorry if this should be somewhere else. The band has a new drummer and we are all enthusiastically back in the habit of practicing regularly again. Brilliant. We do 10am till 1pm on a sunday as it works best for all of us (kids, work etc the rest of the day for various members), although we always used to, until the old drummer left, do sunday afternoons (he couldn't do mornings) and this was fine for 4 years. In addition to new drums I have a new rig which is alot louder than the last (can be heard easily now rather than being a vauge low pitched noise in background) and I wouldn't say I have quite settled on settings yet. As we were recording this week we were having a bit of a soundcheck at the start of practice when a guy walks in who we don't recognise. Turns out he lives over the road and the sound is carrying over into his living room while he is trying to watch football. we never gave any thought to this for two reasons; his house isn't exactly close (or we didn't think it was) and no complaints in 4 years therefore no problem (of course there is a big difference between loud rock music on a sunday afternoon and at 10am which is probably why he was upset). Anyway, fortunately he was ok about it just asked that we look into soundproofing the front wall or something as he appreciates we have to practice, even offered to help out financially (although I don't really feel comfortable with this). From what he was saying it seems to be the low frequencies that are the problem i.e. me, if I remember my vibroacoustics stuff from uni they are also going to be the hardest do do anything about other than turn down or eq it all out. So on a very limited budget what should we do? as far as I see it messing about with egg cartons and carpet is going to be a waste of time, and anything permanent or expensive is out too. A bit of EQing on my part might go a long way but with the orange terror I don't think EQ is it's strong point and besides it's the lows that seem to make my tone work. Moving back to sunday afternoons might be an option but it is going to mean lots of cancelled practices as our drummer is a sparky who often gets asked to work up north on a sunday afternoon. What would you all suggest?
7.
Garethfriend, the pic of your set up looks like my ideal set up too. I'm gassing for valves (Orange AD200, Matamp or Trace V) but cost is the main issue so OBT is the way forward. I favour 15's over 10's so the Barefaced Vintage is top of my cab shopping list. & IMO your rig looks the mutts nutts, tell me I wont be dissapointed if I get one? Cheers, Norm
Cheers, I reckon the orange + barefaced combination is a winner. Think I mentioned it somewhere else but swapping the valves for something else does make a big difference to the sound on this head so theres tweaking options too. Gareth
8.
Thanks, thats really useful. Im considering another compact at the moment, ive realised ive been craving a 2x15 set up all along although my current set up still slams. I think i recall reading one of your previous posts about chabging tubes, which is good to know as well so cheers for that. I think i am leaning towards the 500 as 900watts at 8 ohms really doesnt sound sensible to me as i lack that after a beer! So does anyone own the 1000? Reckon ill be in the orange club in the next couple of weeks.... just need that chat with my good lady!
As if to back up what I have already said about the 500W, the guy who lives across the main road from where we practice came over to practice this morning and very politely asked us to keep it down as the bass was keeping him from hearing his tv. Yeah, I definitly don't need 1000w. On the plus side he was ok about it, even offered to go halves on some soundproofing for the practice room.
9. I initially thought I might have been better off waiting for the 1000w version. However, considering my current setup is drowning out a very loud drummer and 2 guitarists if I go above 4 on the master volume I really don't think anything more powerful is worth it unless you plan to play an absolutely mahoosive venue with no PA support. Valves are 12ax7s (ecc83 is the european designation for the same valve), not a fan of the stock ones personally but I have swapped in some JJ's on mine and the difference is amazing, much tighter sound at higher gains, seems to respond well to different valves so plenty of options for tone tweaking.
10.
Can always wrap it well in the bubble wrap and forget about the box. It's an idea
good plan
11.
I appreciate it is "barely worth the effort to post" but would you be willing to post ?
Yes I would post if I can find a suitable box. Cheers Gareth
12. Well since getting the sterling this isn't getting played much and two days into the month I have pretty much run out of money so sacrifices must be made. It has had a set of new DR Nickel Lo Rider strings fitted about a week ago and had a professional fretjob and setup done a few months back which has made it just about the most comfortable bass to play I've ever come across in any price range. I had the pickup and control cavities screened at the same time so it is also pretty much silent eve when doing silly thngs with the eq at high volumes. Cosmetically it's pretty much as new and looks brilliant in the flesh (wood?). Sound is very bassy and thumpy, sounded brilliant through my ashdown and ampeg rigs but I now have an orange and I've never really gotten on with the sound of it through this amp (compared to the sterling anyway) hence the sale. Looking for £250, more than welcome come and try it, can post at buyers expense. more pics on request.
13. As per the title, basically new. Looks just like this one: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Stand-Stagg-Adjustab...=item56425927d6 Barely worth the effort to post but more than welcome to collect from Derby.
14.
Sold to lucky me Gareth is a quality man to deal with, have no doubts for any future sales from him Owen
Cheers dude. Sold!
15.
Why not boss? there are these
Mainly because they dont work with my powersupply and are not true bypass I beleive (correct me if im wrong though).
16. As per the title really, are there any multi-band eq pedals for bass like the one boss does but not a boss pedal and good quality.
17. The Verve - Sonnet, sounds easy until your trying to get all the very subtle hammer on runs in towards the end and your left had is falling off. Pretty busy bassline to that one past about 2:06 I think.
18. Ive just had a look at it and basically it looks like it's a 4-pole 3-way switch which basically no-one sells so it looks like I'm going to have to get one from manufacturer. bugger.
19.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Dimarzio-USA-3-Way-4...=item20b51ba110 Something like this? Twelve connections. Blademan
Nah that wont work it's a blade type switch a bit like: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Oak-Grigsby-style-3-...=item20ae893737 but with more connections and alot more complicated. Cheers
20. Right, I've been a little careless and knackered the 3-way switch on my SBMM SB14. I thought any old 3-way switch would work (they are all 3-way after all) but no, apparently not. the replacement is from a telecaster and has 8 wiring points, the one in the bass has at least 12. There are 8 different wires coming from the preamp and 4 from the pickup so I don't think the one I got is going to work. I can't seem to find anything on the net that has the info I need, basically where can I get a replacement that will fit straight in? Does anyone do them or am I going to have to get in touch with sterlinng/musicman? It's bodged in one position now so I can at least play it at practice tomorrow but could do with getting this fixed asap so any help would be much appreciated. Will try and get somme pictures if it will help. Gareth
21.
Do you know what speaker is fitted and what wattage/ohms impedance?. What are the dimensions of the cab and approx weight?. Would you courier it at buyers expense?. Sorry for all the questions mate but i think they are relevant and will help you sell it (certainly at that price).
Well as per the title it's 200w and 8ohm, no idea on the speaker unfortunately. Dimensions are 60 x 34 x 47 cm it's approx 50lbs. On the back it has a jack input and output rather than speakon. It was made in England and there is a serial number if anyone wants to do some detective work and find out more details. I would courier but I haven't got a box big enough or strong enough to send it in so there will be a bit of a delay while I get time to go searching for one. Obviously would rather collection but if the buyer doesn't need it quickly it can be posted.
