  1. There's loads for me but it's usually more about the musical setting they're in which makes me like them/not like them. So I'm into prog which means I love the usual suspects but I don't particularly like soul music (Heresy!) so I don't particularly like a stellar list of classic bass players who I acknowledge are great musicians but I they just don't speak to me. Don't have a cow. Just go with what you like. Give respect where due to what you don't like but what is objectively good. For the record and the thread, I'm all in with Jaco - whether solo, with Weather Report or Joni and Victor who's rhythmic concept, regardless of the theatrics, is deep! Witness his gigs with Mike Stern a couple of weeks ago. Relatively little flash - just canyon-wide pocket.

  2. Larger than life character... Played with everyone. Dominated the Warwick bass channel with his intro for many years.

A nice guy by many accounts of his appearances at the London Bass Guitar show.

  3. I win this week! Mike Stern at Birdland, NYC. Great gig with his wife Leni, Bob Franceschini who I'd not hear of, but was awesome on sax... but then we had the rhythm section... only Dennis Chambers on drums and Victor on bass! Great gig - Mike on top form and eviscerated by Vic and Dennis.

I think the EHB1000S sounds pretty uninspiring in passive mode.

I think it sounds ok, good with new strings but I do take your point - there's a lot you can do with the active circuit. That said, the passive mode is a lifesaver (battery-saver) for me as I spend loads of time noodling on my DAW when I'm using the bass.

Edit: Yes, the new finishes look great... I've got the Chad Valley 'My First Guitar - silver sparkle' finish which is the worst in the range but I don't care, my EHiBby is my 'lighter than air' beater and it's great.

These are fantastic if you can find one reasonably priced. However, for what you describe I'm not sure it's the right unit. It also needs external software made by some chap on talkbass and hours upon hours of studying if you want to create your own patches for things like synth sounds. There's better tech in a smaller footprint these days.

Not sure that's right. Maybe for the B3n unit, it's non-proprietary software but the GT-1B is official Boss software and very good. However @Bleat is correct in that the synth sounds are dire - or I think, sound good but the tracking is awful so either way, unusable.

  6. @Diew919,

There's very little coverage of this unit on the Net and even from Boss themselves - only 3 contributors to the online library and their patches are frankly terrible and unusable with hugely varying levels.

I suggest you search instead for coverage of its guitar brother, GT-1 which has some helpful videos.

I'd also just try experimenting yourself with the Tone Studio editor - it's quick to trial different effects chains, parameters and pedal orders.

Finally, I've not had much success with the Pre-amps which all make the sound 'boxy'.

Would love to hear from anyone who's made progress with these?

Decided to pimp my nearly 19-year-old RD600 and boy am I happy with the results. Put in an Aguilar noiseless J4 neck pickup and MM4 pickup, OBP-3 with active/passive switch, mid/range control (push/pull), stacked treble/bass, and added passive tone control. The latter was honestly not a bad choice at all - sounds amazing and the passive control adds a lot, making it great both active/passive mode. Just waiting for my new stacked knob (the other size didn't fit on volume/tone)

Not seen one of those before. Looks like a pre-evolution of the Grooveline series. Full marks to Ibanez for bass innovation and experimentation over the years.

I really want to dabble into sixes again, and when I do this is the bass I'll go for.  Well not visog's actual bass of course, but this model!

Would highly recommend you try one. That middle-C to high C range speaks so clearly for chords and guitar lines, yet the bottom goes all the way down to a thunderous low C and a final B below that.

I know people say you don't notice the fan frets... I do! and the headless means you'll be on the wrong string and fret all the time but I'm getting used to it. Build is great but the form factor is killing: muchio strings, light weight, good balance and passive mode for long sessions. Absolutely great workhorse. Got my GB here for luxury and it has the hi-fi tone but it eats batteries and is heavy. The EHB is my 'does everything' beater!
