  1. Another ACS hearing protection user here and long-term sufferer of mild Tinnitus. I use the 17s, as close to flat-response with Db reduction as you'll get (IMO): https://www.acscustom.com/uk/products/hearing-protection/pro-series/pro-17

I also (ordered using the same moulds) use the ACS Sleepsound https://www.acscustom.com/uk/products/sleep-sound

These were purchased to protect from a loud snorer at home; equally as annoying as Tinnitus.

  2. GR AT Carbon 110 (4Ohms) - Ordered early last month from Bass Direct, arrived today!

Although I use Mesa Subway 210's and Mesa heads, with lots of smaller jazz (Double Bass) and small ensemble work around the corner I felt the need for a very portable and light 1x10. Having read Jay's thread (@JayCarterMusic) and also hearing directly about his further experience of these new GR carbon cabs (thanks Jay) I sold some under-used pedals and some other equipment to fund this purchase. Although I won't use this too much for electric bass, I wanted to be able to fly with it as I have a couple of wedding gigs in Europe next year and the year after too, hence ordering a 4ohm version to ensure I can use as a standalone cab (I will continue to use my Mesa rigs for electric / larger gigs, festivals etc). From the few hours I have had with the cab today, it sounds tight but warm with double bass and it certainly can handle a low B string (rear port seems to help project well). I am really happy and my first impressions are great, but I will post more once I've gigged this a few times.

I've included a few pics for ref. 1) Cab 2) Cab with my back-up Quilter head 3) Cab with my Mesa head (perfect width BTW) 4) Cab with my angled wedges normal used with my Mesa cabs

  3. Hi Beedster.... Here is the info via the handbook:

Power Options 1. 9-Volt Battery Squeeze the tabs on top of the preamp together and the battery drawer will pop out. Snap in a fresh 9-Volt alkaline. To conserve the battery, unplug the input of the Platinum Bass when you are not using the preamp.

    2. 48-Volt Phantom Power Use an XLR cable to connect the Platinum Bass to a mixing board with 48V phantom power. When you turn on the 48V phantom at the mixer, the green 48V phantom LED lights up, the 9V battery shuts off and the Platinum Bass draws power through the XLR cable. The green 48V phantom LED may not light up once you switch on phantom power. This means the phantom power from the mixer is not delivering enough voltage. For insurance, keep a fresh 9V battery in the preamp. The battery will take up the slack if the phantom power is too low.

    3. AC Adapter Input Use only a well filtered and regulated AC adapter with a 9-Volt DC output. We recommend the Fishman 910-R.

Here is a link to a PDF of the handbook too:

  4. Paul drove down and purchased a HB Tele guitar from me. Very friendly and easy transaction, thanks again and enjoy! Very happy to recommend.

    Cheers

  5. Hi Alexa3020 - here is a fab resource for you to have a read/wade through : http://www.ovnilab.com/faq.shtml There is a very useful section on placement. For me, it goes first in the effects chain, and sometimes it is the only pedal I use!

A dedicated pedal is probably your next step - if you are on limited budget, have a look at the TC Hypergravity. I am sure others will suggest many others! I use an Empress Bass compressor, but it is nearly £300.

Enjoy experimenting, and remember that you will probably only appreciate the full affect when you are using live with a band etc.

  6. Used but fully working DRW JD-01 Compressor. Spec as per the DRW Website:

    Quote

The JD-01 Compressor has been produced with the help of Jerry Donahue who has given his invaluable feedback in every aspect of the design, it is again based around the CA3080 Operational Transconductance Amplifier as used our other designs, but with the addition of a BLEND control.

This models four external controls are Attack, Blend, Sustain and  Level, this being  the compressor output level only! the Input trim control available externally on our other models is still available but as an internal trim preset which can be adjusted on the PCB. So now more info about the BLEND part of the design, basically the original Input signal goes through a Split and Blend circuit allowing you to always have part of the input signal appearing at the output, Jerry specified this as he wanted to keep the dynamics of the original guitar signal, and be able to "mix" this into what appears at the output socket.

With the blend control fully Anti-clockwise only the original guitar signal will appear at the output, fully clockwise only the compressed signal will appear at the output, this is useful for setting the parameters of the compressor, before you set a mix level, in between will give you a mix of both. The Level control on this unit only adjusts the compressed signal output so you can adjust the compressor to be higher in level than the original signal if required.

Note, 3M Dual Lock (like Velcro) fitted to bottom. Also please note that I noticed from new that this likes a clean & isolated power supply, or there is an audible click when switching on and off. I always left it on so this did not matter to me.
