1. I use a drop-tuner fitted on my status 5 string.

Use this to drop the B to a LOW A - really nice for low drone tones and things.

Was fitted by Rob / Status when it was built for me in 2004.

Love it....stays in tune great, but nut slot needs to suit string guage or it 'grabs'.

My band is called Toupé - play around the place, original two bass player stuff. Lots of influences etc. www.myspace.com/toupe if you wanted to check it out. I actually live right behind the The Blue Keys hotel (in the bins) I'll drop by on a gig night.
Hi, yeah pop in and introduce yourself....we're usually do a more acoustic type set in the bluekeys as it suits the size of the venue. We're always in there at least once a month playing....

If you gig there too, let me know and I'll pop in too on you!!!!

    All the best

    Greg :)

  3.
I was putting the new gear in the new ABS 4u yest. The amp is well off the bottom and I was wondering what to pack the space with to reduce the strain on the front.
Ideal material would be light, cheap, strong, easy to install and fit perfectly.

Brainwave..... why not cover the amp and rack surfaces with low tac tape to protect them and squirt some builders expanding foam into the gap. The stuff they fill door/window frames with.
Weighs nothing,it's strong when set, exact fit, piss simple to get in the right place and cheap as chips.

So long as you avoid getting it near fans or other orifices can anybody think why that's a really sh*t idea before I try it?

While I'm on. I can see why rack's tend to be black - but where is it written that the inside should be black too. Why not white so we can see in the back better.
Hello,

I have two rack cases which I use with a various combination of amp heads, compression unit & tuner.

I've always been of the opinions there should be as much room around a amp head as possible to aid cooling. Therefore i'd be more tempted if you need 'under-amp-support' to use stick on rubber feet (from B &Q - other DIY stores available ..he.he).
The foam you mentioned would act as an insulator and therfore keep in the heat - not good. Oh, and its blo*dy messy too - think about if you ever needed to sell the amp etc, it would be very stained.

As far as the insided is concerned, i've fitted a little battery powered LED (camping) light into the roof of my larger rack case. This serves as a great light source to prevent 'mole-eyed-squinting' on stage. Do a search on the 'bay for one.

    Hope i've helped,

    Greg :)

  4.
I use Status DB end on my headless Sei 6'er.

I don't think you can really beat them, and the price is excellent.

    It's a pity that Elixir don't make a set.
Yes, & it's a pity DR don't do them (to my knowledge) either.....

Surely the bass string makers know there is a market here? Or would it not make them enough £££?

    :)

  5.
Hi Greg.

I'm also a Hants dweller and play in a Southampton based band. Are you in a band? If so, whereabouts do you rehearse?

Let us know when you're gigging.
Yeah! I'm from Southampton too! Welcome to the board Five String!

You playing in a band locally?
Thank you all for the welcome.

    In response to the questions...

I play in various bands and recording projects.

My main gigging band is with BLUESTATE (www.bluestate.me.uk), which is a funk / soul / blues band. Although its mainly covers, it does get me earning & gigging at least twice ~ three times a week on average.

I do other work with some smaller side projects, and also have worked with American singer / songwriter Tamrah Aeryn, which is origional material simular to Tori Amos style vocals.

Have a good day all, :)

  6. Hi All,

I've snapped my surfboard looking at the net to find a good (cheap?) supplier of the strings I use on my headless 5 string bass.

Has anyone got a good source for buying these at sensible prices?

    I use La Bella 045 ~ 128 Double Ball System / Steinerger.

Stringbusters.co.uk, where I usually get my other strings, don't list a 5 string set.

What sort of duty would I have to pay if I imported say 5 sets from one of the numerous USA websites listing these?

    Any ideas :)

    Thanks

    Greg

Hi & thanks for the welcome.
