hillbilly deluxe
Finger rest.
Pete Academy
Once upon a time, back in the days before slap and tap, most bass players plucked the strings with their thumb instead of their fingers. The 'rest' was fitted to anchor the finger ends, and so facilitate easier plucking. Or so I believe. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Pete Academy
Either that, or Leo Fender had the foresight to make slapping as difficult as possible.

The idea was to hook your fingers underneath it whilst plucking the strings with your thumb.
Chris2112
Yeah, the only thing I didn't like about my Squier Classic Jazz bass (which was awesome, despite the fact I didn't keep it long) was that the finger rest got in the way when slapping! It's only held on by a couple of screws.

However, removing it wasn't really neccessary as the bass sounded best with the bridge pickup on solo being plucked. The slap tone was so-so, so it didn't see a lot of that. Jerry_B
That sort of rest comes in quite handy on fretless basses, I've found.
