Bass Culture
This is just a thought but in Hi Fi circles it is received wisdom that both speakers and others components need a good few hours 'playing in' before they start to perform at their best. I'm just wondering if instrument amplification and speaker cabinets are the same and that new instrument speakers too only start performing at their best after they've had 20-30 hours playing in. Any comments/thoughts? Mark
davidmpires
I do beleive so. I got my Compact a week ago, but haven't played a lot with it. Alex told me that it takes a bit for the speaker to break in. When it does the lows will sound smoother and will handle more of it.
sdgrsr400
For Acme bass speakers, definitely, see http://www.acmebass.com/ then the FAQ then the entry about breaking in woofers. Take it easy during the break-in period.
Hot Tub
I always assume (rightly or wrongly) that anything with moving parts will require some "loosening up" or "breaking in" after manufacturing. Maybe I just have more "mechanical sympathy" than most!
alexclaber
Yes. The flexible surround and suspension take some usage to soften up so the speaker parameters settle into their long-term state - basically you have less bottom to start with. You can push the Barefaced woofers hard straight-away, they won't suffer cone creasing, it'll just break them in quicker. A few hours with a sine wave generator pushing 20Hz through your amp so the cone is moving about 5-10mm total will do the job much quicker than playing through the cab. Cat Burrito
I think everyone else has this about covered. I also leave any amp with tubes on from soundcheck so it's nicely warmed up.
Bass Culture
Great - thanks all for your replies. Pretty much confirms what I thought. Cheers, Mark
