BarnacleBob Posted June 10, 2009 Share Posted June 10, 2009 I think they are the same as American Tobias but assembled in Asia somewhere and are quite respectable - The necks on American ones are superb (they have an assymetrical profile) but i think these ones ( called a Toby to indicate non USA ) dont have the mega pickups (Bartolini possibly????)of the stateside ones but should have the nice neck. Toby Deluxe I think it is, available from Musicyo back in the day, and Sound Control I think it was in the UK, whatever the name of that one that went out of business was. I think the Pro's are probably worth 200-250, with that probably 150 or so, musicyo blew them out really cheap when they closed the european warehouse, and Sound Control got rid of the pro's for something like £170 new at the end. BarnacleBob Posted June 10, 2009 Share Posted June 10, 2009 Snooping round t'intenet the pick-ups are likely to be mighty mite DX5s normally found on Ibanez basses and some people feel they dont have enough power out of them, If it is a lefty ur after, there is an American one on ebay at the moment but obviously not in the same price range £500- but no-one has bid on it with less than a day to go so if it fails to sell contact the seller and try to make a deal if ur budget allows. The US built ones are definitely worth it BB[/quote] Already done that mate , and yeah it is a lefty I'm after. It's either this, an SR500L or another bass of similar ilk S/H (and under £500). Is the SR500L better? Also, as thedontcarebear mentioned before, the 'pro' models as the American one seems to be were being sold for less than half the price, is it worth roughly the price its up for? kingforaday Posted June 10, 2009 Share Posted June 10, 2009 1st one is a toby deluxe, (jazz type pickups, bolt on neck) i've seen them go for as little as £150 or as much as £250 the 2nd is the Toby pro (soapbar pups - neck thru) i've had 2 toby pro's, i sold one for £340 on ebay. some go for more, depends on condition and finish also depends which run it comes from, they're all good and great value or money but the earlier ones are better build quality in my experience neither the deluxe or pro have the asym neck found on american tobias' or the bartolini pups/electrics i've heard that the toby pro custom has the asym neck... can't confirm that cuz i've never owned one. they're confusing basses to be sure, trying to find info on them is not exactly easy! try finding the acoustic pro, i've been looking for one for ages!
