Longwheelbass Posted 15 hours ago Posted 15 hours ago I got a 4 string 35" Jazz Bass tuned BEAD and the GHS BEAD set with a 130 B sound great. Obviously you have a 5er but the tone out of this particular low string would be worth considering. None of that flutter/wobble you can sometimes hear on various low B strings. And the GHS 5 string sets are reasonably priced. Quote

Much, much more importantly than that, the setup on the bass needs to be spot on. Neck as straight as you can get away with, nut cut well. When you string a new string, when just under tension, push down hard at the break angle over the bridge saddle (towards pickup) to create a cleaner break. Makes the world of difference. Experiment with tapered strings too. Absolutely this. So many players have surprisingly never heard of this uber important string set up 'must do' thing of setting the witness point. As Kev said, it makes the world of difference. Even if your strings have been on a while you'd be amazed how the string can gain a bit more tone just doing this simple thing right now. 1 Quote
