String life - Noob question

Do strings need some use to flex a little to reach optimum sound? I read that they 'go off' after much use, dirt in the windings? true/false?

Also, when pressing on the strings near the fret, does the string actually touch the fretboard? TIA, John.

Depends on your optimum sound. New are loud but bright and clicky. Some like that, some don't. They do need stretching in though, to keep their tuning, usually its put new one, tune, play some bends, tune again and you are done.

Generally, if the string touches the board, you are fretting too hard/too far from the fret, and bending the string out of tune. Depends on the size of your frets though.

I have found that non coated strings take a little time to bed in to a sound I like and lose the initial over brightness and then can go off quickly (if you beat the hell out of them like I do :) )

I've used coated Elixir Nanowounds that normally have a good bright (but not over bright) sound from the start and then last foreverrrrrrrrrrrrr! The set I have on at the mo could easily have been on 6 months + and still sound great to me.

Have a look at the BC Wiki on strings if you haven't already. Lots of good stuff there
