Withdrawn - decided to keep it.

This is a custom one off build by Chris May for an up and coming bass player who sadly passed before his time. This is a tough sell for me as the feel and tone are amazing, but at around 4.8kg, sadly a bit too heavy for me and it needs to be played. It was made late 80s / early 90s and Chris has confirmed that apart from the preamp which was upgraded to a John East pre (therefore only the jack is connected, XLR is fitted but not connected), this appears to be original. It has sadly had a tough life, and I have tried showing the cosmetic issues in the photos. Given the wear, and that it is a Chris May one off custom, I have taken a guess at its value; feel free to correct me. Details:

35" scale

Weight 4.8kg (bathroom scales)

24 fret

Nut width 50mm

String spacing at nut is around 9.5mm

String spacing at bridge is 18mm

9V John East preamp

Controls - Vol/Treble/Bass/Blend

Finish is melamine based AC lacquer

Tom from OW thinks it is a rosewood fingerboard on a maple through neck with flamed maple body wings.

Hard case included. Price includes UK mainland postage, but happy for you to pick up from Bedford if you prefer. Could meet within a reasonable distance.

Trades - not looking for anything in particular, but always have GAS. A Boss SY-1000 plus cash would get my attention! 😁 Bass wise would need to be 35" scale and preferably wood finish...but try me 😉

What a beautifully simple yet elegant looking instrument. Overwater have a knack for that kind of thing. This looks really cool, I bet it sounds great.

Thanks. Yes, the tone is great. It also sits beautifully against the body. This is truly a quality instrument.

Your original post says it has had a hard life, but the photos show it's a gigged and highly desirable bass. I'd say the pricing is about right for a fine, handmade bass. Fingers crossed.

Snork

Thanks Snork! The photos make it look worse than it is but I wanted to be transparent about the bass...but yes, naturally road worn!

Exactly. I think it's great. People pay Fender extra to 'distress' CS basses. With this one, it comes with a playing history. GLWTS.

No interest....I've clearly priced it wrong. How about £1050 delivered to mainland UK?

I don't think you've priced it wrong, just it's a niche instrument and things are slow at present. Depending on how badly you need the cash I'd hold on a while. It's a lovely instrument with a slightly sad back story, kinda like the pistol in The Mexican :(

Hi dude. I couldn't tell from the pictures if the bass has any strap pins fitted. Is the pre-amp active/passive? I didn't notice a battery either.

Hey Terry. No strap pins as most people change these to their preference but I can fit some. As per the description, 9V John East pre-amp.
