molan
I could do with some interesting drum patterns to practice with and thought about buying a basic drum machine with pre-loaded patterns but thought that maybe there's some free software out there that would do the job? I did a very quick search and came up with a few but some were trial versions only and others were free software but the patterns were quite expensive downloads. Really not looking for anything flashy just a few funky drum parts to play along with
Eight
You know, I really can't think of any free programs or virtual instruments that come with a library of patterns that you can just pick. I could point you in the direction of some half decent free drum romplers or synthesizers but that would mean you'd have to program your own beats. Maybe drum loops would be an easier option? E.g. http://www.mhat.com/phatdrumloops/beats.asp Just loop them in an audio player and rock \m/
peted
HammerHead Rhythm Station is free, easy to use, but sounds very electronic-dance http://www.threechords.com/hammerhead/ Last week I installed Hydrogen drum machine under Linux and it is very good indeed. The only Windows version on the site is an early development release from back in 2006, which seems to have a lot of bugs http://www.hydrogen-music.org/
barneyg42
http://www.threechords.com/hammerhead/hotstepper.shtml I use Hotstepper, some good drum sounds on there especially if plugged into a good stereo or combo. You can set up and save a whole song or just loop a preset or composed beat.
Bay Splayer
+1 for hotstepper
dr.funk
Hotstepper is great for starting out, easy to use and you can build up some quite detailed patterns. I think you can load your own samples too. Hydrogen is meant to be amazing but the Windows version is too buggy for me to use.

Erm... you could use a basic free sequencer (something like Reaper maybe) but that's maybe a bit more learning of software than you'd want to do just to loop an audio clip. I'm sure someone will know of something if using loop samples is a route you'd like to try. I had a quick look but nothing jogged my memory and I'm away now for a week.
