Bilbo Posted September 14 Author Posted September 14 Another bit of the Bach Cello Suites, this is the Gigue (the last bit) from Cello Suite No. 5 in Eb major. There are a few big jumps to negotiate if you are out of your comfort zone but that was practicing is, isn't it? If you are in your comfort zone, you can't be learning very much, can you? https://bilbosbassbites.co.uk/gigue-from-bach-cello-suite-no-5-eb-major-j-s-bach/ 1 Quote
Bilbo Posted September 15 Author Posted September 15 Jaco's bass part to the tune 'When It Was Now' from the 1982 Weather Report album, 'Weather Report'. Not a great record for Pastorius aficionados but it has it's moments. https://bilbosbassbites.co.uk/when-it-was-now-weather-report/ 2 Quote
Bilbo Posted September 15 Author Posted September 15 Sometimes you just have to follow your heart. Ken Baldock's bass part for the theme tune to Mr. Benn. The band was led by Duncan Lamont and featured Kenny Wheeler on trumpet. And, get this. The musicians were credited at the end of each episode! https://bilbosbassbites.co.uk/mr-benn-theme-duncan-lamont/ 1 Quote

Bilbo Posted September 17 Author Posted September 17 I have spent the last couple of days going over my transcription of Jeff Berlin's bass part for 'Fainting In Coils'. I was looking at it as part of my own practice regime and noticed some errors that needed addressing so I thought it would be an easy thing to do. Of course, I did that one originally a few years ago and, this time, I was able to put the original track through MOISES and I can hear every detail in a way that I couldn't before. As a result, I can hear even more mistakes and the whole exercise has taken longer than I expected. It has also left me thinking that I probably need to do this with ALL of the pre MOISES charts, especially the Jeff Berlin ones! 1 Quote

Bilbo Posted September 17 Author Posted September 17 There is a video and I thought it was attached. Looks like the video has been blocked for some reason. I will check/reattach when I get home tonight. There are plenty of versions of it on YouTube. 1 Quote
Bilbo Posted September 17 Author Posted September 17 This is a lot easier to read than the original and I am pretty sure all the notes are correct. In a strange twist of fate (honestly, I didn't know), ChrisDev posted his transcription of this tune only a couple of days ago. I have noticed a few differences but am happy to stand by mine. Transcribing is not an exact science and we are allowed to hear things differently. https://bilbosbassbites.co.uk/fainting-in-coils-bruford/ 1 Quote

Loved Mr Benn plus you added the full programme of Mr Benn and not just the intro music. Dave Quote
Bilbo Posted September 19 Author Posted September 19 Another request, a transcription of the Stevie Wonder/Aretha Franklin duet on Wonder's composition 'Until You Come Back To Me' from the 10th Annual Soul Awards in 2005. Consensus is the bass player is Nathan Watts but we are open to challenge as we cannot find confirmation anywhere online. https://bilbosbassbites.co.uk/until-you-come-back-to-me-stevie-wonder-aretha-franklin/ 1 Quote
Bilbo Posted September 19 Author Posted September 19 (edited) I don't know if it is the correct title but I have transcribed the bass part from a 36 second Kinga Glyk video entitled 'Joy, Joy' that has appeared several times on my YouTube feed, just to see what was going on. It's great stuff and funky as a funky thing from Funksville. https://bilbosbassbites.co.uk/joy-joy-excerpt-kinga-glyk/ Edited September 19 by Bilbo Quote
Bilbo Posted September 21 Author Posted September 21 I don't expect anyone is out there looking for this one but I did it for me! I saw a Drumeo video of this track on YouTube and thought it sounded incredible. It was only when I went looking for the players that I discovered it was a Laurence Cottle performance and that it was also Laurence who did the big band arrangement. The track is from Gavin Harrison's album, 'Cheating The Polygraph' and is Cottles's arrangement of the tunes 'Cheating The Polygraph and Mother And Child Divided'. Just great playing from everyone. I have been a fan as Laurence since I used to see him in and around Cardiff/Brecon etc when I was just starting out on my Jazz journey. That rhythm section of Laurence and drummer Ian Thomas always delivered. https://bilbosbassbites.co.uk/cheating-the-polygraph-mother-and-child-divided-gavin-harrison/ 2 Quote
Bilbo Posted September 22 Author Posted September 22 Some more Hiromi era Anthony Jackson. The tune is called 'Spirit' and comes from the 2014 Trio Project album, 'Alive'. The track features a rare Jackson solo which is challenging but, in the main, the biggest problem is having to read triplet eighths as triplet eighths as the traditional 'swung triplets' approach doesn't work. Jackson swings some sixteenths but not others. Tricksy! I played this on my 7-string. Sounds lush, as our Nessa would say! https://bilbosbassbites.co.uk/spirit-hiromi-uehara/ 2 Quote
Bilbo Posted Wednesday at 08:10 Author Posted Wednesday at 08:10 I am not wholly satisfied with this but it's a beautiful tune and easy to play. The tune is 'Self Portrait In Three Colors' by Charles Mingus from the 1959 classic, 'Mingus Ah Um'. https://bilbosbassbites.co.uk/self-portrait-in-three-colors-charles-mingus/ 2 Quote
Bilbo Posted yesterday at 20:30 Author Posted yesterday at 20:30 Get a load of THIS! Impossible! Jeff Berlin's complete bass performance of the tune 'Porky And Beans' from his 2008 album, 'Aneurythms;. I have been at this for days and I can't see it now. It's as good as I can get it for now. This is the bass part and does not include the distorted bass solo. It is very indistinct and, if I am honest, I don't like it when JB does that (or anyone else, for that matter). I like to hear the BEHS! https://bilbosbassbites.co.uk/porky-and-beans-jeff-berlin/ 1 Quote
itu Posted yesterday at 21:10 Posted yesterday at 21:10 Yes, Berlin is different, but he sure can play. And I like his style a lot. He is also brave enough to tell his opinions, although I may not always agree with everything he says. Someone said he plays like brass players do. (I agree that the fuzz wasn't necessary here.) Well done @Bilbo! Quote
Bilbo Posted 1 hour ago Author Posted 1 hour ago (edited) Something simple today (I have been working on a track that was taking forever and wasn't really worth it so I abandoned it). This is the tune 'Don't Forget (Nostalgia' from the 1980 Jon Anderson album, 'Song Of Seven' and features the wonderful John Giblin. I always thought Anderson WAS Yes and that, without him, it was only ever OK. I think his solo albums prove that. The part is simple and an easy read so a bit of light relief after a heavy weekend. https://bilbosbassbites.co.uk/dont-forget-nostalgia-jon-anderson/ Edited 1 hour ago by Bilbo Quote
