Wireless Vocal Mics

Hi,

I'm looking to hire a high quality wireless vocal mic for a forthcoming gig.

We've been offered a Shure SM58 with U2 wireless system, but I'm not convinced. To my ears the SM58 is a very dated design which doesn't hold up well with a highend PA, especially when we're recording the gig.

Does anyone have any suggestions of alternatives?? Sennheiser? I'd be especially interested in recommendations of hire places in London too.

Absolute top notch radio mic gear for Vox is the Sennheiser 5000 series with a Neumann capsule.

It was just the information i was looking for to be honest. Yeah, its a bit OTT, but then we are a very ostentatious two-bit covers band with dillusions of grandeur :huh:
I think the rates worked out as £35 for a SM58, £40 for a Beta 58 or £44 for the Sennheiser 5000. Why not go for the Senn?!

The 5000 series is say over the top for what you need.... that gear is designed for Broadcast and applications where RF stability is most important. The 100/300 series will be more than adequate I guarantee you. The reason they want so much money for insurance is that's how much the kit costs to buy.... it's not cheap

Interesting.
The key benefit of the Senn is actually that the on/off switch is on the bottom, making it harder to switch off mid gig. It sounds dumb, but if you had witnessed our singer turning off his mic 5 times in one gig (!!) then you'd understand :) :huh:
Will look into the 100/300 range though.

Very true... also the bottom of the mic where the on/off switch is located actually swivels around blanking off the switch to completely avoid the problem.

Well, the gig is done and dusted.

I went for the Sennheiser SKM5000 from Bettersound and..... IT WAS AWESOME! :huh:

Thanks for the recommendation.

Vocals were crystal clear, oodles of headroom, handled the transients well, and had good feedback rejection even when wandering in front of the PA stacks. It was a bit of an arse to carry though... two crates of equipment for one microphone?!?! And the antennae array that came supplied was perhaps overkill, but all in all. Lovely.

Key thing for me was that those who listened who know about music knew it wasn't a Shure. They knew it was better, but had no idea of what it was. And also a magical moment where our lead singer declared it to be the best mic he'd used and said 'I might actually go and buy one of these. How much are these mate?'. Hahahahaha :)

Should be good at nearly 7K per channel......... give or take a few hundred quid depending on which options you go for
