Fender Jazz - Preamp/pick up upgrade

Hi,

I have a USA Fender Jazz Deluxe 2007 model and am thinking of changing either the pick ups or the preamp - I'd be getting somebody else to do the work as I'm a novice at this!

I really like the bass itself being lighter and slightly smaller body than other Jazz Basses I've played/owned but I've never been completey sold on the overall sound which can get quite harsh/brittle sounding when you dig in or slap (mainly the pops/pulls here). I have the graphic on the bass set flat.

I was wondering if anybody has changed upgraded the pickups or the preamp and what results they got - ie better overall tone for finger style and slap?!

So looking for some recommendations here!!

Many thanks
Freddie

I'd recommend looking into the John East J-retro. If it's anything like the U-retro it's a fantastic bit of kit. There's quite a few videos on YouTube about it if I recall correctly. Would like them here but on my phone at the mo.

This. The J Retro drops straight in - no soldering needed, the the pickup wires simply screw into the terminals on the board. No routing or power tools needed.
