fabricating multislot saddles for jazz bass

I have a Mexican Jazz Bass with DiMarzio pickups fitted, the string spacing is all over the place,I have adjusted the neck in its socket to align the E and G strings with the fingerboard edge, but the string spacing is still off.I was wondering if I could cut some new slots in the saddles to allow me to adjust the spacing, I can get a cheap bridge with saddles off the bay and could use this to make new saddles with slots.I have looked at using threaded bar but drilling and tapping 3 new holes per saddle could be more complicated than I would like.My idea would be to cut the slots only on the top of the saddle and round them off with a needle file.Do you think this is feasible or does anyone have a simpler work round?
Cheers in advance.
