1950 Double Bass

Recommended Posts

I don't know anything about double basses, and am not likely to buy one any time soon. But, I see double basses occasionally and am curious about them.

As an example, is the following a good instrument, and worth the asking price? Or is it a wildly overpriced thing?

EDIT: This http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Double-bass-upright-bass-/161633107434?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item25a2157dea should give an idea of the market price of an unbranded double bass. If it were closer, not in Southampton, I would have put a silly low bid on it.

It's a European (likely Czech or German) plywood bass, mid 20th century. They tend to be sturdily built, decent working instruments, assuming this one doesn't have any issues that they haven't mentioned. I'd say that the price of this one is on the high side, especially as this one doesn't have an ebony fingerboard. I'd expect that you would pay a fair bit less than £1000 for a similar instrument on the basschat classifieds.

I'd be a little concerned by the lump of wood sat under the bridge.

It looks in decent enough condition and as BOTB says, these Eastern European basses are solid workhorses (I use one as my regular gigging bass) - but £1200 could buy you this:

That's a lot of bass, pickup and excellent strings for yer money.
