I use an Apple Logic Pro X mastering plugin that I've customised, turned the multiband compressor down, added a limiter and a nice reverb. You lose the effect of the music if it's too loud. The idea is for the music to draw you into it, you expect the next note and hold onto the previous one with your mind. For the however minutes that you're listening to it, there's nothing else, just the music. It helps loads if you close your eyes too.
