ape Posted April 23, 2014 Share Posted April 23, 2014 Hi all again, I'm full of questions recently, I know when doing clear or transparent finishes on bodies that most woods require grain filler so that the lacquer etc doesn't sink into the grain however, with me painting the main part of my bass in a solid colour do I still need grain filler or will primer do the job? or does it depend on the wood? neepheid Posted April 23, 2014 Share Posted April 23, 2014 It's to do with the openness of the grain of the particular wood. Ash needs filling. I believe mahogany requires filling. Maple probably doesn't. I've heard you can get away without filling the grain of alder. Translucency of the finish is not part of the equation.
