bassatnight
Just taken possession of a lovely Mexican P, the pups are OK - but want something a bit growlier, any suggestions on a pup upgrade? Cheers, Steve.
Conan
How much do you want to spend? How long is a piece of string? I got great results with an overwound GFS pickup... very inexpensive too - http://www.guitarfetish.com/GFS-PB-Pro-PLUS-OVERWOUND-Alnico-P-Bass-style-VERY-hot_p_334.html
dannybuoy
Overwound pickups can sound louder but often also darker. The vintage pickups are actually pretty bright and growly, even though you might associate 'vintage' with 'muffled'. Where abouts in Cambs are you? I have a Fender Original '62 reissue and a Duncan SPB-1 sat here unused, although if you want something hotter I'd look for a Wizard Thumper or SPB-2. Some of the DiMarzio pickups are very modern sounding and growling, as are the US Fender ones before they changed them in 2012.
Oopsdabassist
Interesting, I bunged some SPB-3's in my Mex P, what would be the difference between these and the SPB-1 (or SPB-2 for that matter)
