Live Dubstep Bass Guitar Wobble (Using Ableton Live 9)

I posted on here a couple of years ago about how I make live dubstep style bass wobbles using a collection of effects pedals, well now I have sold them all in favour of using the effects bundled inside Ableton Live 9 and I thought it may interest some people to know how I do it.

Here is the latest track from my soon to be released EP, featuring live bass guitar (among other instruments):

And here is a tutorial video explaining how I make these sounds:

Although I use this style for dubstep, you can easily adapt it for DnB or Jungle... or any kind of dance music really.

Happy Wubbing!

Nice one, I really like this.

I'm a big dubstep fan already, but I like what you're doing using a 'live' bass rather than just synths (the latter being how I go about this sort of music myself). Very cool and cheers for the tutorial too. I don't have Ableton but picked up some good ideas from it. Good stuff!

Look forward to hearing the EP when it comes out. And in the meantime don't be a stranger in the Recording forum... be good to have your input in there, especially if you're offering up tutorials :D

Cheers,

Paul

PS: if you haven't already, check out a guy called Shep from Our Helical Mind and other bands - he's a regular on Basschat and makes music that's right up your alley.

Oh, and here's a funny video about dubstep guitar...

Paul, you should have a wee look at this Facebook page...

https://www.facebook.com/groups/organicbasswobble/

CJ, Shep & Myself are members & it's pretty much dedicated to making the bass go wub. :D

As you probably know, Shep has his own record label called Bitnormal, which incidentally, is releasing the Code: Marla EP.

HI guys,

Thanks for the kind words.

As people have already mentioned, Shep is indeed mastering and releasing the digital version of our upcoming EP (December 1st).

I will certainly head over to the recording section and give what ever input I can there (I need to get more involved with the forums generally really). I've got a few tutorials for various wobbly noises on my YouTube too.

To answer xgsjx's question: I now have very little problems with latency since upgrading my hardware. I used to use effects pedals as I had major latency issues on my PC, but I've upgraded to 12gb ram and although there is a minor bit of latency, its fine for recording. I will soon be upgrading my processor which should completely fix any issues.

Live I use a Mac Book Air which has no latency problems what so ever. I have a external soundcard which has enough inputs for bass, guitar, tri-bass (midi), mics and audio out and the Mac Book handles it all fine.

The video I posted is all about the bass effects, but we also have some crazy guitar effects coming on the new EP too. Both of us have got rid of all our pedals in favour for using Ableton.

I have spent the last 5 years collecting pedals for the live wubs, but Ableton has it all in one little package, plus having the ability to automate effect changes opens up a whole new word of fun.

This is great guys! I had no idea you were all so well acquainted. And there's me trying to be like Cilla Black and set y'all up on a blind date... :D

I'll be keeping an eye on that Facebook page and looking out for the EP once it's finished.

Cheers,

Paul
