Very likely you have some weakness in a specific area and the problem is that unless you identify it and do something about it then no amount of doing/practicing other things will help. IME most self taught musicians reach a natural limit of ability beyond which they never progress because of this.

How are you on all of these areas ?:

Reportiore (in terms of how many songs you know).
Knowing the notes on the fretboard.
Theoretical understanding of harmony.
Knowledge of harmonic contructs (scales arpeggios etc) on the fretboard.
"concious" ear - ability to analyse music away you hear away from your instrument.
"unconcious" ear - ability to instinctively put your fingers the right place to play something you hear or imagine.

I've had a bad few months - took up drumming....

Now I'm back with a passion. I'll keep up the drumming, but the bass is calling more and more and I'm enjoying more than I ever did. I think that after some time you stop appreciating why you first took up the instrument and it takes a break to refresh your memory of why you enjoyed it.

Thoroughly recommend drumming though - totally different, complete break... :)

I'm at the stage of giving up. I just can't get the theory to sink in, even the basics. I'm really starting to think there is something wrong with my brain. It's maddening.

Pop over to the theory & technique forum - we need fresh blood B), seriously though I'm sure we can sort you out.
