Hello all, been lurking for a bit but I thought it was about time I made a post, as today marks a monumental day in my bass playing career...

My name's Sam, I'm 20 and living in Hampshire. Got into bass playing through a bit of a stranger route than most I'd guess... The four-string bug originally bit me a couple of years ago when I was in college, but it was ukuleles then (I have three. 'Cause I'm cool.). I ended up playing bass on a Guitar Hero band for a bit (yeah, I know) before I went to uni.

Fast forward a year and I'd dropped out of uni so I was looking for something to keep me occupied whilst I looked for a job, and ended up taking the plunge and buying the Squier Affinity J-Bass package (with the Rumble 15 amp) at a bargain price from my local music shop. I got into it straight away and 9 months down the line (after teaching myself how to play) I do some jamming and a bit of band work with some of my music student friends who thought I was good enough to join them, which is a nice compliment as I've never had any formal music training apart from learning the trumpet when I was about 10!

I've been looking around for an upgrade from the Squier for a while now, but I've been doing my research and going around testing different basses at different shops. I went out today fully expecting to come home with an American Jazz, and came home with...

Being well endowed (in the hand size department, you understand) I'd been struggling with the neck thickness on the Jazzes and the Precision has never felt comfortable. The Stringray plays like a dream! Such a fast neck and the action is spot-on. Just hoping that buyers remorse doesn't set in in the next few days...

So I thought as I enter a new phase of my playing I'd join up to absorb the knowledge of you experienced bunch!

See you around :)

Thanks for the welcome mate :)

In the band at the moment we're playing mainly punk rock and a bit of indie stuff (Green Day, Good Charlotte, Bloc Party) though I generally don't listen/play punk rock myself. I was brought up by my parents listening to funk and jazz so I've always had a soft spot for some of the bass work there, it'd be nice to play a bit more of that.

By myself, I usually listen/play to more ska punk/alt rock stuff.

I'll get around to uploading some videos when I've got a bit more spare time on my hands (quite busy at work at the moment!) and when I'm a bit more used to the Stingray.

Hey Sam,

Welcome! I'm sure you'll have fun with this site and the banter here.

Great story you wrote. Loved the ukelele/cool bit.

The StingRay looks great in that colour! Mine's boring black (but then I have a sick green Bongo). I sure hope you'll be satisfied with that thing. It's a monster bass, and one of the true classics.

Enjoy!
best,
bert
