Recording a video of yourself playing using an iPad

Has anyone else had a go at this and done it effectively?

It is something I am looking at doing, but would like it to be of decent quality, (the audio at least) and was wondering if any of you guys had any pointers /could recommend decent apps / ways of connecting up?

Ideally you could have your instrument plugged into garage band at the same time and then synch them in iMovie' I'm guessing this might tad the processor tho, I would try standing the iPad on some sort of stand table etc next to your amp so that it picks the audio up clearly. I should have a go with my iPod touch' I have a Kodak zi6 cam tho as well I will most probably record the audio direct to GarageBand on my iBook laptop and synch the video in iMovie. Can't wait to see your result though I bet the iPad has a reasonable mic and the video is hd. Can't wait to see what others suggest too

I think you'll need something like iRig to start with. Not sure on apps, but I'm interested too now!

My personal experience is that the mic will not be good enough for the job. I have tried tablet mics, phone mics and even mini recording devices, but the quality is always terrible. Especially in a band situation.

What I currently use is one of these:

with a laptop, and have just ordered my MS Surface tablet to start using with it. The audio quality is fantastic. And has hardware mic receiving control, and even a single MIDI in.

As for the video, the HD recording on the IPAD is pretty good, and shouldn't be too hard to sync the audio with a separate video track!

I use mine to record riff ideas on both guitar and bass. For acoustic guitar it's fine. I stand it up and record through the built in camera app. For bass, I plug in to my monitors or an amp just so the iPad can pick it up clearly. I've not used it for band recording yet, but my girlfriend has successfully recorded one of my bands playing shooting video on her iPhone. I think there's various apps out there that will make the job easier - my first thoughts are to look for a recording interface such as the Apogee Jam - but it's only a mono recording device. If you are looking to do band recording, then maybe there's a stereo option? I'm not sure!
