We do have to pay unfortunately although I have a practice on Monday for a wedding dep gig, we use an empty pub where we are allowed to lubricate ourselves :)

Is it not a bit tricky playing bass when you're covered in KY jelly?

Sounds like a good deal considering the cost of rehearsal studios! Playing gigs there regularly will get you a following too so you might get more workout of it!

Hopefully as we are all fairly local too, even just hearing us practice each week could bag a party booking or something.

We did this for a few years in an outbuilding in the pub garden , before it got developed

Pros

Storage (only big stuff, nothing that could easily be carried)
Local
Free or cheap factoring in gigs (but see cons below)
Atmosphere, if people in garden often people put thier heads in , sometimes even people started dancing and turned it into a mini gig

Cons

You felt obliged to buy beer, and the rounds ended up costing more than a studio slot!

If you don't feel obliged to buy beer you may anyway

Sometimes friends would turn up and distract from the focus

Sound carried , not all the locals liked it

Well the room is upstairs with a few sets of doors closed behind us, we will all be driving there so at best it will be a round each every four weeks if we take it in turns as its a four piece, we struggle to get friends to turn up at the best of times!

I was meant to practice for a wedding dep gig on Monday, it's not open on Monday's and we can have free soft drinks but they had fitted a concetina grill to stop the new people that are renting a room above from getting in the pub area, they forgot to give us a key so it turned into us staring at the stage through a grill then going home again :(
