Rack Effects

I've been looking at rack effects recently.
What do you guys use for the actual rack? Effects switchers? (I assume you
have a small unit on stage and a bunch of trays with the actual pedals and a switcher
in the rack itself)
And most importantly, is it worth it? Considering
cost, complications in all the signal chain stuff, and space, I'm not
sure if it would be worth it... however, lots of people use effects racks
so there must be a point. I hope.

So tl;dr are rack systems better or worse than actual pedalboards?

Often you can get higher end often better sounding kit that's rack based but personally I don't think it's generally worthwhile for live use. I use a rack based compressor and one of DHAs twin channel overdrives mainly as a subtle warming preamp stage though but it does have a foot switch to allow channel changes from a distance.

Most rack effects are really designed for in studio use where they can be set up and controlled easily.

I use a rack compressor.

Nothing on the floor works for me for that.

I would love some way of switching channel 1&2 of the rack comp in and out so I could go to a super compressed sound sometimes at the click of a switch.

Rack kit is often better quality, has higher headroom (where that is good thing) etc etc than kit running off a pedal board.

Is it enough beter to be worth the hastle/cost?

Only you can answer that!
