But what other basses on that mark would you recommend?

I'd get my butt to somewhere like Bass Direct & try some Dingwalls (I tried one about 7 years ago in Vegas & wanted one then) & also Mayones & Shuker look like top contenders in the £1000-1500 bracket.

Edited to say, How can I forget about the top end Ibanez basses! If you can find a good SR, give it a try.

You need to be the one to choose at the end of it all. You've stumbled onto a bass forum full of bass players, but we're all bass players of vastly differing opinions so what might be right for you might not be the same as the next person. I think the best thing you could possibly do is get down to the Bass Gallery in Camden,or one of the Guitarguitar stores and spend some time finding out what you like. Sites like this are good for clarification but they're not the be all and end all as we all have differing opinions on what's good and what isn't :)

Thats quite a shift IMO from a grand budget to a Dingwall, even the Mayones are 25% over the budget! I liked the Laklands I tried all within a bag of sand :)

ps- Obviously a used Stingray is the correct answer anyway :)

2nd hand should fit his budget though. :)
