LukeFRC Posted September 30, 2011 Share Posted September 30, 2011 (edited) So the vision bass was picked up today, and for a while I've been playing with the idea of pickup up a jazz as a replacement.... maple neck, and pref an ash body. Oh and for not much $ well i since decided that not buying a new bass and focusing on the masters course I'm doing would be a better idea, but though I would relay my findings.... BASS: Cort GB74 this is the bass that on paper i was most excited about playing, on paper i would have bought one already as it looks ace... we will see... Feel: Big clubby and blergh... just not amazingly put together, a neck that just doesn't seem to feel right and.... I didn't enjoy holding it at all. Sound: disappointing. Possibly there was a nice tone in there, the active scooped bridge hum bucker sounded nicest , but apart from that sanitised and characterless. I think this was mainly down to the awful 3 band preamp- maybe it is I'm used to a 2 band on my warwick but really it was not nice. Overall: a dissapointment, i wouldn't buy one. Maybe if i was given one and reshaped the neck and swapped out the preamp it would be nice but a good bass let down by weak links. BASS: Squier VM Jazz the ash 70's one So I used to have a FSR '75 RI and am a fan of the fender version Feel: like a fender- it's nice. not perfect but feels familiar. I doesn't feel cheap at all and is a long way from the old affinity squire a friend had, its also another galaxy from my JV but there you go.... Sound: kinda like a jazz, but kinda not. there isn't a massive difference in sound on the front and rear pup, and the tone control wasn't that great. Kinda jazz like... overall: Well it's a pretty good bass, I liked it- but in need of some nice pickups in there BASS: Farida FJB-20 one I've heard a lot of good things about and wanted to try. Feel: so much nicer than the price, it feels like a really really nice bit of gear.... I played two and I can't find a fault in the construction. Not up there with the FSR fender I had or the valenti or my warwick but I would buy over any recent USA fender I've tried. Sound: nice jazz tone, big, but with it seems a slight high end roll off. overall: Feels great- sounds average to me. Something was odd about the pups- It sounded good, but it didn't sparkle like i expected it too. I liked it a lot though so I tried two. Also the same. If I bought one and could afford a set of nor dies.... it would be amazing, and I wouldn't be unhappy with it without but new pups would be nice. BASS: Overwater/tanglewood classic J it was there, i was curious.... (oh it's a PJ with a poplar body too) Feel: cheapest i think of the 4 and boy did it feel it. unbalanced body compliemented by one of the worst bass necks I've felt. cheap feeling, sharp corners and not nice to play. Sound: my word. amazing. literally the bass tone in my head, it nailed a jazz sound better than some of the jazzes. While being slightly fatter. but this glorious clear punchy bass tone, the highs where they should be.... bliss. overall: i want a real overwater if they sound like this did. It was imence- but it felt like a turd and i wouldn't buy it in a million years. stick these pups in a nice feeling bass, fender roadworn for example, and you would be away. conclusion: Best sounding- tanglewood overall best bass- farida give me £500, what do I buy.... (if i bought new).... none of them, but the real overwaters are on my try list now.... or just the pickups! [/quote] Useful info I just read them and they will probably help some to try for themselves (or avoid!). I liked the Cort myself when I tried one but have gone for an active Squier. LukeFRC Posted October 1, 2011 Author Share Posted October 1, 2011 I honestly was amazed by the tone of the overwater- i wonder was that all in the pickups? for the price it was very very good sounding.... maybe have to take it into the workshop to make it feel as nice though. do overwater sell their pups separately? or... .who makes them for them? [/quote] dunno, I was impressed with the J too. I actually liked how it wasn't overpowered by the P.
