Hi I have the above mentioned bass which I think is amazing apart from one thing noisy pickups, this apparently effects all Urge II basses but I find it a tad annoying hearing humming on such an expensive bass, does anybody else have this issue or solved the problem?

Thanks
Ash

Hey Smash,

I own an Urge II and I have to say I didn't have this problem. I recently had it set up as my intonation was out but I've had it nearly two years and its the only problem I've ever experienced with it.

How long you had yours and what colour you got? I've never met anyone with another Urge II, everyone on the Stu Hamm forum seems to prefer the Kubicki or the Urge I and not many fans of the Urge II

Cheers,

Will

Hi thanks for the reply, I have had it for 2 years also, colour black I tried loads of basses and this for me with its fast fast neck pick up combo etc were just amazing. So I ordered one, it turned up and then I kept it in its box for this time due to my old band had a certain style and needed a passive bass. I have since returned to the Urge II and realise this bass needs it airing, I then found that just lightly rubbing the strings made loud humming noises and even finger playing, putting your finger anywhere near any pick up would make some kind of electric buzz/click, its really annoying me now as so want to play this but it seems too alive and I don't feel happy that it will sound nice during a gig.

One thing I really did wish it had was an option to go passive then the bass would be everything. I know its only aesthetics but the Urge II looks so much nicer than the Urge I and Kubicki INHO

Thanks

Ash

Hmm, sounds like the li'l fella needs some attention to screening and earthing. I was reading a really good article on the net the other day, but I can't find it anywhere! Tell ya what Ash, bring the bass round.. leave it with me... um completely forget about it... ummm.. I'll change my address he he ;o)

If I find said article I'll post a link!

  • 1 month later...

just having a think about this bass, I love the shape neck dearly and rather keep her than sell so would changing all the pickups reduce noise? and also would it possible to add a passive switch?

Hope someone replies... please...

Havent got an Urge but have got a 40th Anni P, thats P/J and active and its noisey if you overload the preamp.

With the preamp on (yours isnt switchable is it?) anything past 1/2 way is boosting the signal and 1/2 way is the detent position. Here its fine... but it took me a while to find that out....

if I whack all the pots up full it humms like a wasps nest.....

Have you tried that by any chance?

Now having tried lowering the volume it makes it better but the noises are still there the pickups seem way too hot, even if your finger is close they pick up hum. I have to turn the treble control right down to get a non glassy tone. Just wondering now if the bass is meant to sound this way especially for tapping but until I hear another I wouldn't know. Hmm back to the drawing board....

Smash, mine has Lace sensors and they are hotter than a RS Cosworth Escort in Liverpool....!

I've found with mine that they pick up dirty appliance transmission very well... FAR too well! it just sounds crap at my house, but at my guitarists place where we jam and practice it sounds well....... lovely like I guess it should...!

I wouldnt dream of gigging mine as its more a collectors piece.... turn down the EQ or just try using the P+J or both Js.... make sure you have a good lead too, that made a difference with mine!

Hi mate, my Urge II doesn't buzz/hum, but the Precison pup doesn't work. Consequently I haven't played it in a while (too skint/busy to have a look whats wrong with it). Any luck so far? I'm sure Ive read something about this online, I'll try and find it 2moz. Any luck when switching the 5 way selector around?

I also have a kubicki exfactor, and a modded mex Urge I. Cracking basses! Never realised I was such a Stu Hamm fan until I wrote that sentence, I seem to have his entire back catalogue building up here!! Would love to grab a piccolo and fretless kubicki as heard on the Outbound record!

Ayway, I ramble on. Good Luck!
