PJ pup advice.

Recommended Posts

I currently use 2 x Euro 5LX with standard EMG 40 DC (soapbars) and Tonepump, i run these through an Ashdown Little giant (1000Watt) and 8x10 ABM 1200Watt cab...with a tweak of the old MXR M80. This gives me an eye watering thunderous sound....Happy days!

However, when i introduce my Euro 4LX to this set up, the sound from the PJ (EMG pups and Tonepump) set up is weak and scratchy in comparison to the 5's.

I was fully aware that i would not acheive the same sound when plugging straight into my current set up so planned to use my trusty Boss GE7B EQ pedal. This did not have much of an impact, neither did adding my Hartke bass attack pedal!!

Can anyone give me any pointers on preamp/PJ pup upgrades i could do to possibly overcome this weak and scratchy tone???!!

Thanks in advance......

I might be wrong, but I believe it's due to the fact that the soapbars are hum-cancelling, and maybe the P/J set up is still just two single coils running in parallel. Maybe that's the reason for the difference in tone?

I've owned Spector Euro basses and I've never considered them weak or scratchy sounding!

Is your PJ bass et up correctly (i.e. pups adjusted nice and close to the strings) as that can massively affect tone; ask 'Lukefrc'.

Also does your bass have a fresh battery in and is your amp input adequately matched to the bass output, ensure that the input gain is matched to suit the bass rather than expecting the two basses to have the same signal strength.
