what to use to refinish a headstock?

I recently purchased a vmj from a fellow basschatter who had applied a new waterslide decal on the headstock but it hasn't had a finish put on top of it, if i leave it as is i think the decal will in time get damaged and the rest of the headstock will discolour in a different way.

Its a matt effect varnish and im guessing polyurethane but i dont know where to source such a thing, also any tips on application would be much appreciated!

Many thanks Jerry, just messaged him to see what one of his numerous lacquers he recommends.

Have you dealt with him before and done this sort of work yourself btw?

No, not tried it yet but I had him saved as a seller for future reference. I may at some time refinish the neck on my Squier P/J - I don't really like satin finishes and would like a darker, glossy look - so this seemed like a good source.

One of my Tele's came with a satin finish, but a fair bit of playing made it go glossy fast.

Also found the same if polishing new gun-stocks with WD40.

I had lacquer and a decal off of them. Got to say they are very good.

Yeah, but I like the amber tones of a glossy bass neck. My fretless Fender Jazz has one and I've always like the look of it :) That pale look of many modern necks just isn't my cup of tea, unless the headstock is painted.

I used satin nitro. You can see some pics of the finished article here http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=136621

I used acrylic on this. Excuse the dust, it is like a magnet to dust after a tCut

I've only used nitro.

Think it's probably tougher but on the downside it stinks.

Sure there will be one of the many more knowledgable BC'ers along soon.

I got a decal for an old bass of mine and the recommended coating to seal it was Halfords Clear Lacquer http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/...tegoryId_165495 . Tried it and it worked a treat. The more coats at 15 mins intervals you put on the better it will look but apply very very lightly on each coat to prevent dribbling. If you wet sand with a very fine sand paper at the end it will look even better. .Make sure you have plenty of ventilation and spray in a dust free room. There's a few vids on youtube that goes through the technique
